Propane gas tank regulations

The TRNC Government has realised that they are missing out on uncollected revenue and this time it’s propane gas tanks.

When the tank has been installed, the owner of the property should have in their possession a safety certificate, confirming the tank has been installed correctly and meets all safety regulations.

Hope this thread is allowed as I don`t normally link to other sites but feel this is important information.

I agree,those gas tanks are a 'potential bomb' and can I just say that tightening up on this flagrant disregard of rules and regulations was well over due .
They obviously have the spare manpower to deal with this serious matter now that the authorities have successfully dealt with things like:-
1, Driving whilst using a mobile.
2.Bikers not wearing crash helmets
3.Fly tipping
4.Power cuts.
5.Being charged twice for street lighting.
6.Stray dogs and cats everywhere.
7.half built buildings.
8.Poor driving standards/high road death rate
etc. etc.

I have yet to be made aware of an issue with leaking gas tanks-after all,It wouldn't be good for the company that supplies and fits them to blow their own customers up now would it?

However, I see examples if the items I have listed on a daily basis,yet nothing is done.

Talk about getting priorities all mixed up.

Totally agree Philoz. Think the point is that I don't think anyone was ever aware that they needed a certificate or that they had to pay annually, and now are going to be charged for the arrears plus penalties for not paying. Nothing changes.

30tl annualy is hardly gonna break the bank. I think it's worth it to have central heating and instant hot water in the winter, we are like hot toast in our house

Not complaining about 30tl per annum, but how much is the certificate going to cost, plus 30tl x the number of years since installation and, if I am reading it correctly, you are liable for previous owners years as well, then add on whatever fines they decide to impose for non payment. It could work out quite expensive.

Zarafet is absolutely correct. It always makes me cringe when people say "its not going to break the bank" or "its a cheap as chips" etc., By the time you pick up the bill from the people whose house you have bought and whatever fine there is, or paid someone to come and do a check (and if the worst comes to the worst and the tank has to be moved - and I can think of a lot of houses where the tanks are too close to house) then it could very well "break the bank" and be the final straw to some people.

If you bought your house new (I did) had the tank fitted myself by professionals (I did,mr pipe.) correct distance from the house, (I did) . It shouldn't be to bad. So no need for cringing in my case. And I will pay the not so bank breaking 30tl a year. Defiantly worth it for central heating and hot water in winter, cosy cosy cosy. )

What is the correct distance from the building? Is it dependant on tank size?

I really can't remember what we were told 8 years ago I'm afraid but I'm sure we have friends who have their tanks far too close to their houses, frightenly so in a couple of cases.

As per previous post, tank installation has to be away from the property and A/C units. Distance was not specified in 2006.

Again I agree with the previous post, neighbours may well have problems if an inspection takes place to get the required certificate. I remember very well having the Policemen jumping up and down on the concrete plinth to house the Gas Tank, a visit from the respective Gov Depts, ( 3 in total), and finally an inspection of my Fire Extinguisher.

All boxes ticked and Gas Tank Tax paid annually. I did wonder why I paid this when nobody else in my vicinity did - now I know I'm legal.

you are only legal until they change the rules (yet again), but if you are a friend of the cousin of the man who checks the paperwork then all should be ok.

At last someone that confirm it is not just scaremongering.

Can you confirm is the form is the correct one, if you remember, and did you have to go to Lefkosa? realise things may have changed since 2006.

When we moved in 8 years years ago it was a legal requirement even then and our builder said that the Gas "people" were supposed to inform the Government when they had installed a tank. HOWEVER, non of them appeared to do so and as the builder said, "they don't want to make work for themselves" and we (the builder) are not going to tell them. In the end, we decided against central heating and the problem didn't arise in any case.
