Just to let you know both my Nationwide cash cards have been cloned by a device in the cash point machine.

The only place I have used both cards is to draw money out at HSBC in Girne to withdraw sterling, be careful

Thanks

Can anyone throw any light on how this is done. It is a scary thought that it can be done to anyone anywhere, or is there more to it. Does someone see a pin number. How on earth can anyone read a card which is inserted into a machine and then copy it? Any experts out there, or could anyone connected with a bank give us some reassurances?

A Bank card can be cloned using a skimmer device that fits around the card entry slot in a cash machine.
Captures card details but not the pin I believe.
Look out for a slightly larger slot covering that sticks out a bit more as well, diffult to spot.

I would like to know, from the original poster, which ATM machine it was in Girne that he/she believed the card was cloned from, with the date and time. - This could help others to see if their cards could be at risk.

Skimmer are normally only left on for very short periods, in unmonitered locations, this means the people doing it are not captured on any CCTV and they can quickly get the data from the capture device and use it.

I used the same type of card at the main HSBC branch on the 6th and there has been no problem with the card sinceit was used. .
Again more detail when this sort of important information is posted.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT! Please 'share' this with your friends, family, and loved ones.

People are using these fake keypads in different countries since 2011 up to this day. Crooks are now more technologically advanced and use a Card Skimmer - An illegal electronic device that can capture all of the personal information (Name, Expiration date, 3 digit verification pin, etc.) from a credit/debit card and ATM card. Only a few people are aware of this so always double-check. Here are the other signs to know if it's fake:

1) The red, yellow and green bars or lines/buttons on the right-side are usually longer than the regular ones (cancel, clear, and accept).
2) There are usually no marks on the left and right of the Zero (0) button.
3) Try to raise the ATM Keypad - MAJOR sign that it's fake.

See photo for further details and comparison.

If you encounter this, immediately report it to your bank to avoid further scamming.

Thanks so much. That is REALLY helpful, and I will certainly spread the word. Maybe we should put on Facebook and I will get a note put into the Star, but more precise details would be good. it does sound as if it was not HSBC. But thanks again for the VERY helopful information which can protect us all from this particular scam.

I believe it happened at HSBC branch in Girne. I only say this as this is the only place I can think I used both cards.

I am not sure at what point it was done as I use the cards two or three times a month, and I believe sometimes they hold onto the data a while before they try and use it.

Thanks

According to this 2011 US newsreport on youtube, when it comes to fake pads being placed over the actual key pads, their best advice is to be suspicious of anything unfamiliar, and in particular of any "glue or tape residue" to the sides of the pad.

Quite amazing that according to this newsreport "it's estimated that theft from ATM skimming now tops (and this was back in 2011) at 1 billion dollars annually" - though of course that's not just from using fake key pads, it also includes hidden cameras (to learn your PIN) along with the card skimming device. Unfortunately, with that sort of money being made it's little wonder that the thieves are developing more technologically-advanced devices for taking our money
