Collapsed pier built without authorities' approval

Post by iancrumpy »

According to the Kıbrıs newspaper, the pier in Karşıyaka, that yesterday collapsed (see photo below), severely injuring an 11-year old boy, was built last week apparently without the approval of the authorities.

It writes that no request for its construction had been received at the Girne Kaymakamlık, which is the local office for the Ministry of the Interior. In the report, it explains further that after this initial application, any pier or jetty's construction would then have to be approved by the city planning department, the harbours' authority and the department of the environment ... and would need the written approval from architects and engineers.

The boy, Aziz Taşlıovalı, who was under the pier when it collapsed, is still in intensive care, though his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

What a terrible thing, I do hope the little boy makes a full recovery. We actually sat at the cafe about four weeks ago watching the men building this jetty, when will these people ever learn to follow the rules that are there for the safety of others.

I am not doubting you for one moment Elizabeth, but in the report it writes the construction of the pier/jetty started ten days ago - probably the Kıbrıs reporter got the start and completion dates mixed up.

Re: the boy's condition - I didn't write it, but it does say in the Kıbrıs report that, although still in intensive care, he's getting better.

By the way, re "jetty" or "pier" - At first I wrote "jetty", because "piers" are normally considered to be larger constructions, but then, after checking defintions, I edited what I wrote, because jetties are normally for boats ... and I don't think this construction was designed for that. I suppose the problem is that around the UK, because of the tides, we don't have these relatively small constructions ... so we're not really sure what to call them. And for me, I only really have TC friends here and when I talk with them (even in English) we refer to them as iskeleler ... so I avoid the issue. In any case, what do other members call them?

It was definitely around four weeks ago, I know because I had an operation on July 1st and it was exactly two weeks later that my husband took me for a trip out to break up the boredom of being confined to the house. We sat there having a coffee and watched two men carrying out the work.

Elizabeth,
Unfortunately, it's not the first time that the newspapers here have made a mistake. Thanks for taking the time to post again.

In truth in the report it writes "the construction started *approximately* ten days ago" ... and we know that here in Cyprus "approximately" can be stretched a little bit further than we are accustomed to

Sophie,
I don't know the names, but there's a couple of cafes between Güzelyalı Plajı and the coastal road, just before the road winds left up over the hills.
The pier/jetty has only been there a week or four, so it's possible you've not seen it.

We were there at the start of July, and I sat for about 45 minutes watching one guy building the steps up to it.

It would certainly seem that the reporter wasn't listening too well ... or someone hasn't been too honest as to the length of time it's been there.

But according to you jllvehdist, what was is "it" - a jetty or a pier ?

And it was me that brought this matter to the attention of many.

The condition of the child is distressing, but I don't see how that prevents me asking the question I did. Did you have a smile on your face at any time today? - shame on you for that ... after all there is a boy lying in hospital.

Considering the amount of time and effort I have contributed to this forum in the way of translating reports and the like, I think I was entitled to learn what the other members call the thing.

Soner, Marion,
As I am the originator of this thread, I request that you close it.

Thanks so much Ian for sharing this news. If anyone has an update on the condition of the boy or any acton taken against the constructor of this, please start another thread. for now I am locking this one. quite understand that people want to get terminology correct, but it is the old story of 'lost in translation'. a pier is normalloy a much longer construction with buildings etc on it, and a jetty is a place for boats to moor to, and also for people to dive off etc. But in this case it doesn't matter toomuch on definition, what does matter is that it got built. I am sure the intention was a good one, but shoddy workmanship meant it backfired (at least one can assume it was the workmanship as otherwise it would not have collapsed.

I am wondering if this is the sports club where we had the Raft Race, and next to Guzelyali Beach. the new owner has been trying to improve the premises. So sorry it has backfired. It is also a place where turtles nest.

anyway, this is now locked and thanks again Ian for the news. Please keep it coming, as so many of us don't get to hearof these thing,s being too lazy to learn the language of our home! (message to marion - remember, can do better!)
