and so does NCCCT, KSF, and many other charities and charitable institutions here. It is so difficult to choose, and so little money to go around. At the moment Tulips seems to have by far the larger chunk of the apple, but maybe it helps a larger number of people. If only we could all help trhem all.

Re: Tulips the help those with cancer association need Your
This charity not only helps anyone with cancer who needs it, they provide support for families, cash for operations and chemo and on top of all that I believe they pay for 25 nurses salaries and an oncologist's salary at the state hospital. So i for one am surprised that their running costs are only 106,000 per month.
Cancer is the scourge of this country with more cases diagnosed every day. So the more money that is raised hopefully some research can be done to find out why the cancer incidences in North Cyprus are so high.

Yes, Tulips expenditure seems to go up by the square - lots of new cases, and maybe just too many expenses . as to research and Cyprus, I heard a very interesting talk by the specialist form London, who gave the reasons why in his opinion it is so high here. and would you believe it - he reckoned one of the biggest pieces of poison that is carcenogenic is....................wait for it........................MILK.

Every month the Association needs to raise this 106,000TL - this pays for the 11 Nurses and one Oncologist at the 28 bed Oncology Unit in Lefkosa. There is no goverment funding. It also pays for home help for terminally ill patients e.g. dieticians, physiotherapists, physiologists etc. Helps child cancer patients pay school/university fees. Fund the only Hospice in the TRNC and on, and on and on. We are all aware that each Charity is invaluable and ours no more than the others, however most charities are not having to fund their own Medical Unit and provide essential care and support to all Cancer sufferers across the TRNC, whether Ex-Pat or local. What can we do - keep raising awareness and keep raising money and keep your fingers crossed.
There is a George Roper Fun Day at the Kings Bar, Turtle Bay complex next Sunday - go along and support the stalls, the kiddies, games and the great night of entertainment. There will be some fabulous stuff being auctioned during the day. Also go to the BRS Jubilee Ball in aid of Tulips, attend the Lapta Fun Month, with monies going to Tulips and most, most importantly fill in a standing order form to pay monthly into the Association. This is what they need more than anything, regular income. You can pay what you want there is no set amount, just what you feel you can give.....
Why should you - I can hear people saying - well Cancer affects everyone in some way during their lifetime and without a Cancer Unit here in the TRNC life could be very very difficult for these people - or even you!!!

If I were a betting lady, (which I am not), I would bet that just about everyone here has had cancer affect their lives in some way or another.
Just hope thatTulips gets the money it needs, but also there has to be some other solution long term. The hospice i an extra drain on monies, annd maybe the government could be persuaded to take on that, or the wages of the oncologist, or something. But I guess all that has been tried and discussed. Just hope that something happens, or else it will be North Cyprus loss - including possibly many of those in government whose lives (again i would bet) have been or will be touched by this dreaded scourge of our times.

A direct debit is very easy to set up.
Is it possible to post a direct debit application form so people can print off and use, or where can they be obtained ?
You never know if or when that diagnosis will apply to you needing help, information and support. The older one gets the greater the likelyhood statistically.

Just a thought, but could not Tulips and NCCT get together to help each other and get a good unit for cancer patients in Lefkosa? They (NCCT) must be collecting 7ktl+ a month with coffee mornings, shop, bingo, quizes etc and have not bought any equipment for probably 8/9 months, well nothing that has been advertised. With one charity providing the staff and another the equipment pooling resources must make for a better hospital.

Re: Tulips the help those with cancer association need Your
good idea. Last year all the charities got together to pay for equipment needed for the Children's ward in Famagusta. The Kemal Saracoglu foundation, Children in Need, Tulips, NCCCT, and The Little society of Kyrenia all chipped in to buy two vital pieces of equipment.
The charities all have different constitutions and of course NCCCT may buy equipment only, and have been doing so supplying the hospitals almost on demand. They are able to supply for any age, but Kemal Saracoglu are for children and Children in Need try to spend their money for children's causes. the other problem is that tying in with government takes time. The Children in need were getting land from the Government to build a hospice and hopefully NCCCT would havehelped with equipment and LSOK would have helped too, but Raziye opened her hospice so the idea of the custom built one went on hold. But I can assure you that NCCCT HAVE bought equipment and they are currently waiting for Kyrenia hospital to tell them wehat is their next item on the Wish List.
But it would be great if it could be done again - and I know that CIN are keen to, but it is getting the charities together to discuss and find where there is a way they can work together - again because of their respective constitutions. Maybe your thoughts can act as a 'prodder' for them to have another go.

Just to reply to the comment that NCCCT has not purchased any equipment for 8/9 months. I can assure you that this is not the case. We spent approximately £60,000 last year on equipment. This was publicised in the local papers, both in English and Turkish. This year we have spent approximately £70,000 on equipment so far. This has been mentioned in the papers but the official ceremony to hand over the equipment will take place soon. We are very pleased with what we have achieved, but by no means complacent. Much more needs to be done, and today I spoke to the hospital authorities and asked them what they now need.

This is constructive advise and please don't take this the wrong way, but in the light of the recent problems of where charity monies is going, please publish your accounts with the hospice etc in the local press, cos I must admit until I had more insight I was thinking where on earth do they get 106.000 (??) running costs as quoted in Cyprus Today, also a lot of others will be, so let us hear what Tulips are doing and where the money is going, I am sure it will up your funds if you do so, and I genuinely hope it will, please do not take this the wrong way, it is meant to help""

a v alid point Barbie, as many people have taken fright (unnecessarily). But if tulips has time to come up with some figures, it might help. I kow they are very busy, and I would willingly put them in the paper to encourage people tosee that the money is properly used. What is Tulips response. I guess one should talk to Raziye rather than our dynamic two-some who work so hard to raise funds.

In answer to your questions regarding Standing Order forms. In the following banks you can find the standing order forms, Asbank, Girne, Creditwest, all, Garanti Bank, Girne, HSBC, Girne, Iktisat Bank, all, Seker Bank, Girne, Turk Bankkasi, Universal Bank, etc, etc. Also if you email tulipscarole@yahoo.com, we can email one to you and check out the web site tulips-trnc.com.
With regard to the Accounts. These are all controlled in Lefkosa by the Association, we fund raise and pay the money into the main HTWCA accounts. You would need to contact them on kanser.cancer@hotmail.com for the attention of Raziye Kocaismail to find out how to view them.
Again for charities to work together it is up to the main committees, and each Charity will have its own opinions on that........ Ideally the government needs to take on at least some of the financial responsibilities, all would be ideal!!!!! But again promises made and broken again and again and again.
Without the funded Oncology Unit we have now everyone would have to pay privately for everything, the costs are prohibitive, ask anyone who has experienced this. We have no answers just a prayer that this Association can be helped to keep going for obvious reasons.

Answer to "Mel" - the auction items for the Ball have already been donated - it is not a BIG auction, just 5 good items that should bring in lots of bids. It is not the only way we are raising money at the Ball, there is also a Lucky Dip and a Money Multiplier, all proceeds from the Dip, and 2/3 proceeds from the Multiplier will go to TULIPS along with the auction money. But thank you very much for thinking of us. Maybe you could help at a later function by donating something?
TULIPS is the BRS charity of the year, so at all our functions we will be trying to raise money for them. Of course, if someone wants to donate specifically to the Blood Bank fund instead we do not turn it away but our stated charity for 2012 is Tulips.

Mamachina thanks for the info. The items come under heading Surplus Gifts and unused. 1 an Edinburgh lead crystal whisky decanter,2 Royal Minton (Henley) 6 dinner plates, gravy boat, soup tureen with lid and 2 open vegetable dishes.
If I am too late for the auction proper perhaps any KibKomer wants to make me an offer then I will donate the money to Tulips. Let me know. Last time I enquired the cost of a dinner plate was 40GBP and the soup tureen over 200GBP. Obviously not looking for that sort of money just a reasonable amount to donate.
best regards

Quite happy to wait, just thinking their need sounded quite urgent.
Don't have much dosh, could not afford to bid in the auction, just a bit of lateral thinking.

|yes, the funds are urgent, but it is every month that they need it. so the need will be as great in Septem, ber and beyond as it is now.
As to not a lot of dosh, that applies to a lot of us, but giving what we can inwhatever way we can is what matters. It doesn't have to be money, does it, but gifts and use of one's time and talents.

I do not know how much money you raide in auctions, but itdoes prohibit alot of people because they just do not have the money to pay for expensive items, surely a raffle, tombola like the 112 have at their ball will bring in more money, just a thought,it must be the same few people who can bid? Anyway good luck with your events.

Yes, I would prefer a raffle. As you say ,it`s not everyone that can afford to " bid " but a greater percentage would buy raffle tickets IMHO.

I see the snag with the 'Auction' as this: if you have 6 people willing to put in a high bid, you only get cash out of the winner...
I suppose if you've got 6 good items, then you might get 'em all :
I think that you need a special-shaped spanner to get those 50p coins out of their hands!

There are a lot of people here with money who areprepared to bid, but I am not one of them. Like others, I enjoyed the tombola at the 112 ball as I won a fan for the expenditure of 10tl. the items on auction at the ball are 'top bracket' stuff, and the tombola will have several price tiers (again beyond my pocket), but the BRS ball iss a special Jubilee one, so I guess they hope to raise 'jubilee money'. It is good to have a variety of things, and the ones of real value deserve to be auctioned rather than via raffle ticckets.

Without being too 'preachy, one of my favourite verses in the |Bible is where one of the disciples says to a lame man at the gate of the city "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee..................." . I guess there are a lot of us who do not have silver or gold, but have time, energy, experience, and allk kinds of gifts of character and being, and as long as we use those when and where we can, it creates a balance on things.
Glad we agree, and I think it is SO important that we are not made to feel guilty because we cannot whip our a cheque book to give lots of dosh, but that we can feel good because we know we have given and shared what we can.
Having said that, when I win the Lotto I will help out with the silver and gold!
