Martin, you do appreciate that you will need to have a Work Permit and pay Social Sigorta to work here, that is if you want to be legal and not considered an illegal immigrant by the Government authorities. I'm sure those better informed than I will let you know what to do.

It will be difficult Martin, but miracles do happen. Butsophie is correct. tobe legal you need to find a boss to pay you, get a work permit et,c asnd you will probaby earn only basic wage, around 1500tl out of which there is social insurance. depends on what kind of lifestyle you want, and if in U.K it was as you said, then maybe money is not important.

You could become illegal but would be in danger of being thrown off the island at any time, paying a fine and being in deep trouble. alsl your visa would be a visitor/;tourist visa and probably a max of 90 days after which you MUST go somewhere and come back (NOT the south).

having said that, occasionally you see jobs advertised here, - take a look at the jobs - travel reps, telephone sales etc, which just MIGHT be a more certain avenue.

I know that does not sound helpful/hopeful, but if you are meant to be here and you push the right doors, it will happen. so does anyone out there have any other advice.

And good luck!

Think you must realise that it would be impossible to work here without a Work Permit and remain legal. You would only be able to obtain a 90 day visa, which means you would have to renew this after that time. Going South it is possible that you would only get another 60 days, and I have heard, on occasion only 30 when you came back over the border.

There are pros and cons for living in TRNC and I think you have to look very carefully at both before making any decision. Maybe feels good if you are on holiday, but there are many frustrating situations to be faced on a more permanent basis.

What you haven't really said is whether you want to be legal or illegal in the TRNC. You say you are fully aware of the legal side of working here. Do you mean you are prepared to ignore that and be illegal?

I am sure that Martin knows what he wants. Lots of people here take chances and work illegally, and that has to be the choice of the indiv idual. I wish him well, as I know how tough it is to find a job and also have enough money to pay rent, etc, etc.

If only I knew of any direciton to point the man, but sorry to say I don't. So good luck Martin. Maybe someone on here can give you some positive help in finding work - preferab ly legal because then you will have peace of mind. If you offend the authorities you could be in b ig trouble, but then you know that anyway.

as I say , good lucki. I am sure it would be horrible to do back to U.K to a really rottne lifestyle.

Sophie, there is now a way of getting a work permit as a "self Employed" or the nearest to it as an interim measure, eg used by musicians who need to work for different bars!
There are two agencies now that will do the paperwork for you, and you choose the category of work that you do. This will cost in the region of 200-500tl. Plus a deposit of a Euro bond to the bank of 750E, and a 50E charge for the "letter" from the bank needed for the registration process.
Then, armed with a fatura pad, you pay the agency 10% (or so) and the tax of 16% at the tax office monthly.
When I signed for mine I had a quick look at the various categories on the sheet and there were hundreds of them, you chose the nearest to the job description that you need.

Elkiton, is correct with regards to the two agencies.
However, in addition to the 10% commission and the 16% VAT you would still be liable to pay the monthly Sigorta contributions every month as this due whether you are employed by a company or registered with an agency.
Feel free to telephone 05338807476 for further info.
Hope this helps.

That sounds goo,d but then if you are self employed you have to get the work? Or does the agenc y get it for you? And if you getonly min wage what is one left with, as I assume there is Social Sigora, agency fee, 10? etc. could you clarify this, as it oculd well help lots of other people.

and if one gets the job oneself, does one still have to pay the agent. Not sure how it works here, for if Martin goes self employed and gets work himself, how is he then legal if he does not pay the agency fee.

sorry to seem a bit dumb, but I am sure there are others who would appreciate a bit more of a break down on this, as it seems the answer to a prayer.

Marion, not really sure if both agencies have same fees etc but hope this helps.
Can only speak for one, however should their own work be sourced there is no commission but if the work comes direct from the agency then commission becomes liable. Those registered with the agency are not entirely 'self employed' in the sense that the term is used in the UK, probably a better way of describing it could be 'sub contracting' as the agency needs to know or send the workers out and tax liabilities come through the agency not direct to the worker, which generally occurs under a self employment status. The sigorta and vat will always be due and the sigorta is due regardless of whether they have worked or how much work they have had.
The bond is also subject to an individual's circumstances and not always required.
Anyone considering this option really needs to speak with the agencies to get the correct information that is relevant to their circumstances.

PS There would be an inital sign up fee with the agency which is paid before the work permit process is undertaken by the agency and it is the agency that registers the individual as a worker, hence they become legal. There would also be additional initial costs incurred for the necessary medical that is required at the outset. (Which I believe is about 130tl but have heard of some paying 180tl)

That's really, really helpful, and I hope it helps Martin. Howeve,r iot occurred to me that an article in the Kibom times might be helpful to a lot of people.. Would you like to send one, or do you want to add wha tyou have written, and I cna put it all togethe,r buit I DO want to make sure I get it 100% correct. I strongly suspect there are a lot of people out there (maybe those considering coming here form elsewhere in the globe) that are not sure baout such things.
Of course, the big headache is that one might not be able to earn enough money to live and be in a worse state than if they had stayed away. (I hate to be negativ,e but am tyring to get an idea of just how one might be able to survive, as I know how difficult it is to get work. ) it is O.K for those who have partners who earn enough, (form whatever source) but for someone on their own, it can be a real challenge.
so, are you game for an article?????
