We are looking for any talented youngster that would like to enter our TEEN TALENT COMPETITION being held at The Black Olive Cafe on Saturday 21st September.
On this occasion we will be raising money for SPOT the protection of Turtles.
More info on the time it will start and the price of entry will follow.
This will be a great fun day and a time for us to listen and enjoy the very talented youth we have on this island.

Competition is a popular blame agent for low self-esteem. It is easy for an adolescent to interpret a competitive loss with failure, thereby damaging self-esteem. Not only does competition damage self-esteem, it hinders interpersonal relationships. Instead of being a demonstration of strength and confidence, competition is a show of insecurity (Kohn, 1993). Competition may be viewed as a disservice by educators who should be improving the adolescent's ability to relate well with others. Instead, this spirit of competition held in many activities serves to block healthy communication.

Competition implies comparisons which should be eliminated from parenting for the sake of self-esteem, according to Evitt (1990). Rather than make comparisons between children, which makes the child feel inferior, parents[or any adult] should acknowledge and encourage the natural differences found in individuals.

an interesting way of lookingat thing,s but that of course doesnot breed olympic champions, or stars.
But for this talent competition, everyne will be a winner as the money is for SPOT, which is much needed.

also as we all know this is often just a show case for talent, and often the ones who do not get first prize can become world famous from such a small showing!

it is always fascinating however to see the two different faces of everything - including competition.

Personally I just HATE competitions cos I am shy (well I was) but if I win then I feel TERRIFIC.

Of course Marion, these kind of 'competitions' are 'TERRIFIC' if you are on the winning side, how about when you are not.

You are saying SPOT will will at the end and its not important, so:

1. Why not have a teen talent show instead of turning into a 'competition', what difference/benefits this organization is planning on gaining when they turn this activity into a 'competition' and create some winners and losers out of it.

2. Would people not donate anything to SPOT if adolescent kids are not showcased in front of an audience and then voted upon and most are told that their talents are not good enough?

You need to talk to the organisers over this, not be. But it would be interesting to see what other KibKomers think about competition. They have been aorund since time began, and it seems it is only the modern idea of esteem that has changed it.

But as I say, it is up to the organisers who I am sure owuld be happy to discuss it with you, - and oculd i suggest that if you get them to change their mind you give SPOT A NICE SUM OF MONEY!

Most kids like showing too, so maybe a showcase would be a better expression, but kids like prizes too. Hmm.

I have to disagree with you Kemal on this one, but it is just my opinion. I think competition is healthy, even for the young. It is up to the adults to teach them that it is only the taking part that is most important and not winning, and to be able to sensibly deal with actually losing. I look after Unaccompanied Minors and sometime play competitive games like tennis or badminton; I notice that some children hate to lose and I always pull them aside to explain that it is just a game and that they do not need to be too competitive and that they MUST win, sometimes to a point that they will even try to cheat to win. The same applies to playing board games, this is something that needs to be taught, and if not, can you imagine what the World would be like if everybody could not deal with not being a winner? Age would of course come into this, as I do disagree with 5 year olds being pushed by parents to enter pageant shows.

i'm sorry you feel this way Kbsat but this is a very light hearted thing that you are making out to seem must worst it is up to both parents and children if they want to entry and will be make as fun as possible also raising some money at the same time for Spot.

Please could you tell me the age bracket for this event, I appreciate it says teen talent, but do you mean between 13 and 19 or higher/lower.

No offence, but I wholeheartedly disagree with your viewpoint as it sums up just how PC correct the world has become.
I was not always the first pick when picking teams in the playground, I never won anything at primary school either at football or top of the class. Did I run away and cry.....of course not. Competition is healthy.

Having been at Black Olive for many different events, the ambience and friendliness of Vicki, Unal and their staff as well as the wonderful customers makes it one of the friendliest places in North Cyprus.
it is the most child friendly venues I have visited and I have absolutely no doubt it will be yet another great evening and will be enjoyed by adults and the children alike

Everything you have said in your post , a bit of fun, having a great evening, children getting a chance to showcase their talent, parents and other adults having fabulous evening, money being raised for spot, and having no losers-only winners --- in my opinion can be achieved with just an activity of a talent show.

I have raised my concern why I think competition of this kind for children and young adults would be unhealthy. If somebody would come forward to tell me what benefit this 'competition' would bring over just a talent show, any benefit other than saying 'little competition doesnt hurt' (I am not interested in how this competition is harmless, is there any POSITIVE expectation from having this?) , I am willing to rethink my position, otherwise, I guess I will just agree to disagree with you all.

Does Teen Talent competition suggest that a lot of Teenagers will be putting on a show and there will be prizes at the end of it.

I know which of the 2 titles my 2 boys would have preferred.

Sorry i have not replied before but i have been talking to customers, parents, and contestants about this Saturdays Teen Competition and no one involved has a problem with the way we will be holding it.
