this is the newly invented 3rd overall and 2nd 'light' version of the hunting season. Only allowed to hunt couple of bird species that are pigeon size and smaller.

Dates allowed to hunt are 1st, 4th, 8th and 11th of September, thats it.

Forgive me - I am puzzled. If you don't know the dates of the hunting season then how do you know the permitted areas this year?

Perhaps Soner or a colleague could get the relevant info and publish a page in the excellent new KKT or add a page to the forum under 'sport' or 'events'.

We also heard gunfire on Sunday in Ozankoy/Bellapais area....VERY close to residential housing. In fact, I have never heard it so close.

Regardless of knowing the dates,I do know that Ozankoy/Bellapais area is ALWAYS prohibited.
Yes Mrsgee very close,as it is every time.No one seems to take any notice of restricted areas. If you report to the police,by the time they bother to come out (if at all),the hunters are long gone.

Oh well, that's alright then, we used to watch Love thy Neighbour and Alf Garnett , we were brought up on it but we don't anymore. I repeat what sort of people eat little birds and call it a delicacy, SICK ONES

I suppose there are some people on here who look down on us brits because we eat little lambs and pork. Perhaps they think of us as sick but are too polite to say so

We chose to come here so we have to accept the traditions and customs of these people who have allowed us to live on their island

Little lambs and pork are not endangered and are reared for the purpose. All sorts of animals and birds were considered a delicacy when it was necessary to hunt wildlife to survive. Very many countries have now realised that continuing to slaughter certain creatures for whatever reason means their eventual demise and possible extinction. It is about time the Mediterranean countries grew up in this respect, it is indeed a "national disgrace", as recently said by the RSPB.

There has been shooting in the olive groves in Bellapais this morning - as usual close to our house. We are always able to sweep up lead shot on our pool terrace in hunting season!!!!!

If you shout loudly at these people they do go away so they know full well they shouldn't be shooting here

Yes Muffin I heard them in Ozankoy. If you are close enough to actually see them and shout at them, why not try calling to designated number 140 to report them.I can never see them only hear them.

Whatever our personal feelings on hunting, we are 'guests' or 'Visitors' according to our annual/bi-annual visa stamp' in the TRNC. if you are concerned about hunters being too close/in out of bounds areas et al, call the Polis. Bemoaning your plight/opinion on forums will achieve nothing to resolve your issue/concerns. IMOH.

Most of the all years shooting animals that you mentioned are vermin, you are entitled to your opinion, btw most of the others that were mentioned are bred for shooting and we don't obliterate them into extinction. We are talking about pretty little birds here.

Also the shootings are in controlled areas with beaters, wardens and safety marshalls present not in peoples back yards.

I take my leave of this thread as I really cannot be bothered talking with numbskull idiots with an IQ of -1.

It's 7.30pm the sun has set and still numerous hunters shooting in the Bellapais olive groves. my question is where are the wardens who are supposed to be policing these activities? I suspect that many of the the police are also hunters!!!!!

Tomsteel,I agree that we are visitors in this country, and I love it,unlike some others on this forum!! Where I have ever said I disagree with the hunting,I admit I don't like it,but appreciate it is the custom of this and other Mediterranean countries. My argument on this posting is that the hunters have no respect for the so call law, which bans hunting in certain area and within so many kilometers from habitation. My friend had her dog killed several years ago by a stray shot. That could have been a child injured. or killed.

1. Of the species mentioned only mallard are bred - and not that many of them.

2. In English law you must only be 50ft outside private property (i.e. your house or garden) or a public highway (from a motorway down to a footpath) - but you cannot shoot 'in the direction of' if it is unsafe. Here it is 200 metres.

3. Your idea of wardens and safety marshalls is sheer imagination - no such thing exists....and the beaters are nowhere near the guns.

4. There are no controlled areas as such - all shooting rights belong to somebody (usually but not always the landowner) and with that person's permission you can shoot on every square inch of UK soil.

5. In England, provided you have a gun licence, and only a criminal record or proven insanity can prevent that, then you can shoot away to your hearts content on any day except Christmas Day. Here, as well as a gun licence, you must be a member of the Hunting Federation and to join you must pass a species recognition and gun handling test. The Hunting Federation also provide the wardens - it may not be perfect but it is a far better start than the UK.

I applaud your decision to leave this thread - perhaps now we can deal in facts.

Your post spoke of 'animals that you mentioned' - pheasants have not been mentioned in this thread. If the best you can offer as 'evidence' is a single 12 year old report from an animal rights group then I iterate that we would be better dealing in facts.

Further, your post seems to support rearing for shooting - "...are bred for shooting..." as opposed to "...we don't obliterate them into extinction..." but your evidence criticises rearing. And you don't criticise the Hunting Federation here for it's breeding programme - or do you approve? It's difficult to know.

JBA, I do not support any form of hunting, I think it is barbaric what ever country it happens in. I am an animal lover, all animals. Hope that answers your question.

Ref my post of 7.30pm yesterday when they were still shooting in the neighbouring olive groves in the dark!!!! Wecould see their torches flashing among the trees so lord alone knows what they could see to shoot - unfortunately not each other. Rang 140 but got a very lacklustre response - they were not interested.

There is no excuse for anyone in the so called civilised world for murdering animals for sport which is what "hunting" is. The insidious methods used in Cyprus and other Med. countries should be outlawed by international law, species are being wiped out for no reason other than so called "local delicacies".

Who, other than a select few consider the 12th August "glorious" in the UK, the birds certainly do not. As for fox hunting if it is just the fun of the chase then use drags. The hunt followers should take turns at being chased, now that would be something I would turn out to watch!

I am totally opposed to hunting in any form, in any country, unless it's the only means of getting food, which is hardly the case here in TRNC. Having said that we do have to accept the way of life here, even if we disagree with it, if people feel strongly about these things then they should go through the proper channels to try to change things.
Hunting is a very emotive subject and everyone is entitled to their own opinion on it, just as they are entitled to express that opinion without being insulted by other posters.
I feel that the comments made by a certain poster on here, who has nothing positive whatsoever to say on TRNC, say far more about her than her actual posts say, I have to wonder why she bothers to log on to the forum.

No need to insult each other, for we are the family of KibKomers! But certain things do raise temperatures, and comments do get made. I realise this will be locked, but I just wanted to add my 50 kouros worth (not pennies, cos we are in TRNC). wHAT IS ENCOURAGING IS THAT THERE ARE many TURKISH cYPRIOTS who are opposed to hunting, or at the very least abuse of the hunting laws, so I firmly believe that it will change as more and kjore people realise the balanc e o f nature is important and that we intelligent people are Stewards of the earth and that doe s not mean being unnecessarily cruel. However, I am sure that the TC's who care are equally encouraged buy us if we make our feelings known to them, that we too are against 'wrong' hunting. Hopefully our comments are noted and made use of.
I know of citizens around me who are VERY concerned that there are people who ignore the rules on hunting and these concerned people are constantly reporting those who break the law, and welcome it when any one of us reports it. It may be 'their' country, but we have a duty to support those who wish to uphold the law. O.K. will now lock this thread, but of course if anyone has anything they feel of value, they are at liberty to start a new one.!!!!
