Conversation at Shayna.

Post by Panchocat »

Just back from lunch at Shayna with two English friends and our two disabled Turkish Cypriot neighbours.
Lovely lunch, good service and then as we were leaving an English "lady", I use the term loosely, on the table behind us said in a loud voice to the couple opposite her.
"All London Turks are the same, mentality of peasants."
My friend and I just looked astounded at her as we were helping our disabled TC friends who had lived in London for many years.
She looked at us and said. "I can say that, I am local."
I quietly replied that so were we and our friends are ex London TC and in no way can they be accused of having a peasant mentality.
She just shrugged her shoulders and said "Perhaps not."
With an attitude and comments like hers I despair. No wonder expats are getting a bad name.
Local she may claim to be but I doubt integration is a word she understands or wishes to understand.
I had to make this comment as I was just so dumbfounded.
What do others think?

I often dont admit to my U K origin as I am ashamed to be in the same catagory as some folk. I call myself cypriot now through and through.

If she was local, was she actually English by race, or what??

Well, whatever... some people open their mouths and anything pops out, while the brain is sleeping or maybe on 'holiday'!!!!

Yes she was English and takes local status in her own mind as opposed to tourist status was our understanding.

Panchocat, perhaps she meant "pleasant mentality" whilst living in their country would be wiser. Sal

There's an old Geordie saying: "All fur coat and nae knickers". Seems to describe that person perfectly.

I'll have to ban her, only because I have the mentality of a peasant!

actually I rekcon if one goes by the proper definiton of a peasant they are indeed pleasant. they are simple (in the proper sense of the word) , hard working people who care for their friends and fmaily in equal portion. don't know what the Oxford dicitonary says, but that is how I understand it.

But of course on the other hand there is a syaing 'It take sone to know one'.

I rest my case.

There are a few arrogant, ignorant people about who still think we have a colony and need shooting as they tar us all with a bad brush. My wife had a similar experience on our local bus, I missed it as we had been separated as the bus was full or the stupid, sad woman would have got a few home truths from me.

I wish I had said more to her, Halffull, about her ignorant attitude but I was helping my elderly disabled friend who as a London TC would have been upset more than she was already on hearing the comment.
For her sake I hope we don't see, or hear her again at Shayna!

Absolutely no reason as far as I read into this for a comment like that to be made. Shocking, disgraceful and disrespectful, sounds more like riff raff abslutely no manners. Would love to know her name?

My apologies to these ladies, not all Brits are like that.

I hope that if this woman was with friends they had the good grace to say something to her or walk away.

Why do it/say it? I just can't see a reason for it. One can only hope that one day someone will return the favour and see how she likes it. As the saying goes, "What comes around, goes around".

I have heard many locals (Cypriots) speak quite badly of "London Cypriots". I have no opinion one way or another.

That said I am quite partial to Pheasant.

It takes 1 or 2 to spoil the rest. OR it takes a few to draw a general conclusion about people and their culture- But it needs to reminded and remembered that NOT everyone is the same or does the same, even if they come from the same. If looks could hit, smack, or kick...- usually the saying is "if looks could kill..." but seeing that killing is a major sin and illegal (though no one would know who did it or what happened) then I just changed the words to be "nicer." I wonder if this ole bat is a kibkomer and if she is reading the posts. "I can say that, I am local" -(here is where i may get in trouble with Soner) I would say "F. you! that still does not give you the right to disrespect people. Who do you think you are? Goes to show how much and what kind of education you were taught and learned. I am sure someone holds you in the bottom-most position of yuck!!" With that "good-day"lady"."
