Yes, I mean the Merit sign!!!!

Driving home yesterday evening I could see the thing from a mile back and realised it was alternating between two images. It was not until I got within 100 yards and it changed from an almost pleasant shield sign to a script advertising the hotel that was literally blinding for a couple of seconds.

If nothing is done, which we know it will not, then there will be a serious accident.

Pass the sign heading west with no night vision left and there is the camera, after you have lost your concentration and been blinded. How can you concentrate with that distraction.

Better than it was with the bright blue sea that screamed at you from more than a mile away. Now replaced with les,s bnut still blinding sign. What's to do. Do you think everyone should complain to the Merit, or to the Belediye or the minister of the Environment. |But what it really needs is for citizens to scream, and not the yabanci. So who on KibKom who is a citizen is prepared to point out that this beautiful sign could have very ugly results.

Unfortunately Marion you are correct, we yabanci are of no significance. When someone is killed either at this sign or one of the other dangers to driving maybe the Road Safety lobby will think about doing something.

It will be down to money ie how much the Merit are paying the Belediye for the permission to put this sign up.

We, as mentioned above, are of no significance until someone loses a life.

They will have paid a serious amount of money to the local belediye for permission for this sign. They need to know the name of the person who signed the agreement so that liability can be shared for the accident that is sure to come, someone will be guilty by being complicit or by being incompetent.

A question for Marion.

I no longer buy the English Language newspapers but I remember there was always a man supposedly representing the TRNC Safety Organisation for which I cannot remember the name. (senility I am afraid) Maybe there is someone at the newspaper you write for that will know it and maybe you can get a msg to him to go and see for himself.

I know some people say that on these forums we just whinge and moan but this is a case of genuine concern that lives are at risk.

I think you will find out the CESV is no longer related to Dr Avci's organisation the TKOD.

Talk about 'tous ce changes" (or whatever the correct French spelling is!). Actually I do recall that Dr Siber was talking about ads, but I believe that was to do with the plethora of boards along the various main roads, particularly on the way to Lefkosia. I did notice however, on the way home tonight that the board is 'tamer' than it was. Almost bearable in fact, so maybe people HAVE complained. ~This is the third in the current series I have seen form huge and overwhelming blue, to tamer blue to even tamer with the blue sign and then red words of Merit Royal. What next I wonder. Or are they gauging public opinion>

Went to Tuvetuloa! last night and saw the sign, Lapta bound admittedly and turned off,but it seemed OK not blinding. Don't know about the other way!

There is a difference between "whinging Brits" who complain about anything and everything that isnt just like "home", and reasonable concerns about subjects such as road safety which effect everyone , of all ages, gender or race, the rising number of RTAs concerns a lot of Cypriots and the support of expats (who after all pay road fund tax) may well just tip a balance, . It is not just glaring signs, it is the number of distractions, and obscuring official traffic warning signs. There were complaints about people ignoring traffic light by pedestrian crossing in Girne, but last time I passed it (and I wasnt driving myself at the time so was looking out for it for future referene) I didnt even see the lights because they were so low and dim compared with other lights around and so manyother distractions

On the subject of night vision, can I appeal to 4 x 4 drivers to check the adjustment of headlights and not drive on full beam with approaching traffic. A lot of smal saloon drivers are afraid to go out at night, because of the glare from oncoming headlights. And keep you distance when behind - lights from close behind flooding a car can destroy night vision as well as reflecting off rear view mirror.

Totally agree and now hopefully will get it sorted, we have been told the garage in Catalkoy near the speed camera has a beam setter - Yes! can't wait to have the lights correctly lined up on both our vehicles.

My car had a built in adjuster if you have two passengers in the back I can adjust the beams from the dash board.

I think if some one just told merit manager they could tell the owner to change it or to lower the light effect on there pc so it isnt so bright because they can do it on there own computers

Funny that, I am going to a 4X4 to get above the glare of spotlights from small saloon car drivers who insist on just putting on every available light they have! At least in the high up 4X4 I stand a better chance of spotting people wandering along the side of the road in the dark and don't have to use full beam at all unless it is really required. It also gets me out of the way of the Taxi full beam from behind and in front along with all the one eyed white van's that are permanently on full beam.

Don't blame it all on the 4X4, when you are up there you can see a lot more and who is to blame - you would be surprised!
