Looking for a bit of advice from a "teckkie" please.
My other half's laptop, having been shut down some time earlier, frequently switches itself on at midnight.
It is operating under Windows 7.
Any ideas as to what might be the cause?

Heard of this once before, think it was something to do with the defrag program which can be set on auto start. Maybe worth a look.
Some are wise and some otherwise.....

If you do not do a full shut down the laptop but put it into a sleep or hibernate mode then 'scheduled tasks' in windows like windows update or disk defraging can wake it up. If you are doing a full proper shut down, then it has to be a setting in the BIOS that is waking the machine up. For some info on the kind of BIOS settings that can cause this type of behaviour have a look here
