dogs shot by Police

I understand, on good authority, that the Police shot and killed two dogs this afternoon, on the road to Lapta cemetery near the junction of the road which goes to the dump.. I understand they were stray dogs, not that that makes it better.

Will they have shot them without good reason?
Let's face it - There are plenty to go at if they like shooting the poor souls willy nilly.

yes, a black and white Cyprus poodle/terrier and a brown dog!! I am just worried that the brown dog is one I have been feeding not too far from here and did not arrive tonight, but having said that he does not come every night. To allay every ones fears, these were almost certainly not belonging to Sandra and Terry.

The object of the posting was really to say do not let your beloved pets wander

If its the black/white terrier then I think it might be the one who had very matted fur and the one that a friend and I have been feeding since we live nearby.I dont understand why they would have shot them since they didnt appear to be doing any harm and were being fed?

if you live in that location, then, sadly, I think it probably was the dog you have been feeding. I did not see the incident and have to rely on what people tell me, but I do know that little dog, it has been around for months.

Rowan, any idea who would have called the police out and what happend to the bodies, hope they weren't just thrown into the nearest ravine Is there anyone in the area that keeps chickens?

I think the dogs were sleeping in a half built house but im wondering whether any of the house owners nearby reported them because they did spend lots of time outside peoples houses in the road.I hope the police took the bodies away and that they didnt leave them in the tip.There is a huge dead goat been dumped up there so I wouldnt be surprised. Im glad I rescued our last one from beside the tip or he might have gone the same way.

Sounds like some cold hearted person reported these 2 poor dogs with some excuses.
Anybody can make a good lie and I wouldnt like to guess what they have told the police.
Because I find it strange that all of a sudden the police come out to shoot 2 innocent dogs.
Police take their time to deal with other issues let alone a dog being a nuisance unless its attacked somebody, if the dogs are being nuisance I thought its usually the belediyas (spelling)! Problem to move them on?

Was these dogs healthy?
Were they tagged?
Because if they are tagged, they are protected. Everybody knows that.

Sad to say but the dogs would of been dumped yes. Take a look how bad some people treat animals here.. Bins, starved, dumped, drowned, poisoned, shot!
Do the police care?
Do they heck!

they were not tagged dogs

they were healthy as far as I know, certainly the one I was feeding was healthy

Was one of them a small cyprus terrier white beard and chest and grey/ black in colour. Just hoping it's not my Lucy

although as I have said I did not witness this incident (and thank heaven for that) I do not think for one moment this was Lucy. The little dog did not look like the photos I have seen of Lucy and it had been around for too long. There is still hope of finding Lucy and I wish you luck.

totally agree, I am very upset by this but please do not give up hope on your little dog, she maybe found, hope so

I heard reports that two dogs had been attacking and killing livestock in the area and maybe these two were seen doing it, or they got the blame, I don't know. I'm only going on rumour, but I don't think the police take potshots at dogs just for the fun of it. It's a very sad situation here made worse if these dogs were known to people who were feeding them. Unfortunately dogs do not have to be hungry to attack young goats and sheep, it's just something they do. I'm a dog lover and have three myself, so I find this very sad but preferable to putting down poison.

Agree with frontalman, in the UK if dogs are running free around lambs they would be shot. Unfortunately this may catch an innocent dog but that is life in the country side. The goat man that has he goats near us has around 250 baby goats and I know he would shoot anything that could effect his livelihood especially as money is tight for all.

If you have dogs as pets then they must be kept secure and on a leash when walking. If you are just feeding them outside then there may be sad consequences.

Just as an aside, frontalman is running a campaign trying to stop poison being laid. He has a petition which if you are interested and live in and around Karsiyaka pm him for details. I still have a copy FM and will get it filled and returned asap.

I was brought up in a rural area of Scotland, dogs straying onto farmers land would be shot. If a dog "worries" a sheep that is pregnant the sheep will often lose the lamb and can often have complications itself. I do not know what the situation was in this case but to simple herders the loss of a lamb and or sheep is a significant loss. I personally believe that if you can gain control of roaming dogs there would be a lot less poisonings.

Does not matter if there was no evidence, if there has been any worrying at all EVERY loose dog becomes guilty in the eyes of the shepherd or goatherd. I have already commented as has jonnie above, if you care for a dog especially at this time of year it must be tethered in some way.

WE are living in the countryside and you must abide by the rules be it here or in the UK.

The trouble is we seldom know the facts one way or the other, and a lot is clouded by speculation, again one way or the other. The dogs I was referring to in my previous post were shot for being on the farm, by the time they had done any "worrying" it was too late.

Here in Dipkarpaz the rule certainly is ,the Belediye will shoot the dog if more than one person says they have been worrying livestock. Could be chickens or sheep.One dog here, he is a pet and the small boy wants it, but it can't be let loose otherwise it chases and kills chickens, I've seen it.. (i know....training and all that....) but he is otherwise a very sweet dog, looks like butter would'nt melt....

Well I am so pleased I do not live in the barbaric Dipkarpaz - what a pleasant bunch they are there! Here in the Esentepe area, local farmers/goatswains/shepherds welcome my 2 dogs, who are hardly ever on a leash - albeit they do not 'worry' livestock. What price life on the say so of just one individual's statement?
