Will it ever happen. It seems such a no brainer not to demolish the lot.Start from scratch and watch the pennies come rolling in.What happened is history. It really is time to move on now.I dont think there will ever be re-unification on the island. But what a shot in the arm it would be if Maras became a going concern. And Turkey opened its ports.

'Until 1974, both Greek and Turkish Cypriots were able to live together on the island largely without incident.'

That says it all, really!!

But apart from that, I don't like the look of the coastline of Varosha at all, looks like any other high rise hotel skyline with a very narrow strip of beach left, no different from Benidorm etc. Maybe in the fifties it was the new thing but now??
I've seen lots of little video showing it in its hay day, but still I can't like it.

Good morning Dippersgirl,
Your response to "Until 1974, both Greek and Turkish Cypriots were able to live together on the island largely without incident." was "That says it all, really!!"
I presume you wrote this to show this is yet more propaganda from our GC friends? As you probably know, it certainly wasn't "without incident".

Dippersgirl - Doubt many Turkish Cypriots who lived through those times wouls consider them " largely without incident ".

Don't take my word for it. Ask them.
Life's too short to stuff a mushroom

Mel, I too am not certain, but I think Dippersgirl quoted that so as to make the whole link less credible. I'm fairly certain she is also aware of what happened in the decades leading up to the Turkish "invasion".

Guys, guys. We seem to be straying off topic here.Or was my mess 1 miss-leading.If so then i apologise. What i meant to say was.Maras could be an absolute tourist goldmine.Set aside the rights and wrongs of 74.Draw a line in the sand. And lets get on with it.Time too open up the ports as well.

Paul, OK we are indeed straying off-topic, but please be a little more selective in the links you choose in future.
Getting back to the question you asked - Yes, demolishing and bulldozing the whole place certainly needs to be done, but clearing the area is not going to be cheap. Is the beach so wonderful around Maraş to warant building there? As Dippersgirl writes, it certainly doesn't seem so. If I had enough money to build my own holiday resort I'd head further up the coast and try to locate it somewhere around Salamis or even in the Karpaz region, and have none of the expense of demolition. However, maybe to help remove this now-ugly reminder of the past grants would be made available.

I was being sarcastic, I do know what happened from many Tc's, books,Soner's included, etc, etc.
That sentence I quoted from the article and it just got to me.

How they can say such things straight faced is beyond me.
As bad as seeing a Greek politition on TV with tears streaming, saying 'OUR KYRENIA'

Of course after decades of being fed their version of their history, it almost in the genes!!

Hi Ian,

The reason that i posted the link was to make the point that Maras is exactly the same now as it was in July 1974.Some people may not realise that.In my opinion it should be flattened.Whatever the cost. And ideas brought forward as too what should be put there.I certainly wouldnt like to see tall hotel blocks there though.

Get the children involved, for once.Ask for their ideas.Try and bring the two communities together. For gods sake its 2012.Why cant we move on.I personally think that the place would be a gold mine. But it would need lots of thought.

You're right Paul, children would have much better ideas. No politics and finances would come into it just pure enjoyment
Maybe the place could be a goldmine, but maybe it would need one first to start the project.
I read once, that evkaf was involved somehow, not sure that was ever properly resolved. I think legally, especially as lots of owners of different nations are involved, its such a hornet's nest, can't believe anybody has the stamina to tackle it.
Could be a lovely place if handled right

I think it should stay as it is as an example of "crassness" as with many other hotel complexes which blight the beaches of the south of the island.
I remember ,when Aya Napa was a few houses and a church, what an eyesore Famagusta was.
Mind you the north has been spoilt by over development but at least there isn't any "high rise".

You're right Dippersgirl - "Evkaf was involved somehow" - they own a lot of the land in Maraş (as indeed they do on the whole of Cyprus), and their land can only be rented, not bought :
http://www.cypnet.co.uk/ncyprus/history ... evkaf.html
Quoting from this web page :
"Noboby has the right to sell land designated as vakıf (charitable foundation). Evkaf properties can be rented for ten years, but a longer period requires the approval of the parliament."
So, yes Dippersgirl, this really complicates matters

I'm not so certain Paul - Rightly or wrongly, when it comes to finance in Islam, things are not decided as we would.
