50% increase
With not being a regular shopper in the supermarkets i do not really know the prices except for the last 2 days i went into Lemar to buy Taz Sut a milk i like,1 day it was 2TL a bottle the next an increase of 50% to 3TL a bottle
I suppose everything is on the way up and if the TL gets stronger nothing will come back down.
Any one else seen any drastic increases ?
Not moaning,just saying !

Re: 50% increase
That would be about a 10% increase-4.50 x 10%=45+4.50=4.95.
I never look at prices to be honest.
I still think it's really cheap to live here.

1 carton of coop milk up from 2.50 tl to 3.50tl, a disgusting rise for what is a 'basic', no problem for me but yet another blow for those earning lira and paying sterling rent.
Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Oh well, back to grapefruit and black coffee for breccy I guess. Strange though, because cafe latte (made with semi skimmed milk) doesn't appear to gone up in the two venues that I usually buy them.

I noticed yesterday that the milk in Lemar had gone from 2.10 to 2,80 virtually overnight, I'll have to cut back on my cuppa at that rate.

Re: 50% increase
I doubt it's profiteering. The price has been the same for quite a while whilst the price of electricity and petrol have dramatically increased. I would imagine that it is these costs that they are having to cover by increasing their prices.

Re: 50% increase
Koop milk in Starling this a.m. was 3.20, so it would appear there are some variations for those that the time and/or inclination to shop around. Be very careful though, because everything is going up in leaps and bounds, they are not keeping up with changing the price tickets and you can get a shock when you come to the check-out.

Re: 50% increase
Maybe its something to do with the increases in Turkey that have filtered through to TRNC.
The Turkish Government announced new tax increases on the 1st of January 2014.
The government has increased the amount of Special Consumption Tax imposed on cars, tobacco and alcohol, as well as the Special Communications Tax on mobile phones.
The tax increases were announced in the Official Gazette of Turkey.
The tax imposed on vehicles is according to the engine size and the new increases vary from 5% (lowest band) to 45% (highest band)
Fuel prices have also increased by an average of 9 kuruş, making Turkey one of the world’s most expensive places to buy fuel.
A litre of diesel will cost approximately 4.63TL and a litre of petrol 4.96TL.
Speeding fines have been set at 172TL for drivers who exceed the speed limit by up to 30% and 356TL for those who exceed the limit by over 30%.
The fine for running a red light increased from 166TL to 172TL and drink driving offenses has been set at 727TL and 911TL for second offenders.
Taxes on cigarettes have increased from 3.22TL to 3.75TL (minimum tax per packet) and taxes imposed on most alcoholic drinks have increased by 10% - 15%.
Beer has been increased by 15% and raki has increased by 10%.
Taxes for mobile phone subscriptions have also increased by 40%
The increased taxes have led to the value of the Turkish lira falling further. The lira now stands at 3.56 to the pound and 2.17 to the dollar.
The tax increases where made a day after the government announced new minimum wage increases of 5% for all workers.
The net minimum wage in Turkey will rise to 846TL in the first half of 2014 with a further 6% rise to follow.

Is it all just relevant to the weak lira .
Eg 2 years ago lira 2.24 now 3.45 etc .....can't expect locals paid in lira to absorb it for ever we suppose .

Andrew4232. I just copied all of that but in between it does say about the increase in fuel and alcohol. No need to be sarcastic in your reply or put my name in inverted commas.

Re: 50% increase
While the car was being serviced at Tiga Motors on Monday we went across to Erulku supermarket where we were pleased to find Koop milk at 2.40TL and Mera at 2.55TL - both these products are substantially more this side of the mountain.

I agree Owl Lady, we wouldn't make a special trip. However, interesting to see that they can sell milk at that price, makes you wonder why it is so much more in the supermarkets this side of the mountain.

I agree that a huge perdentage of stuff is more expensive in the Girne region. We rarely go to Guselyurt but when we do it is quite obvious that food shopping is less than here.

Re: 50% increase
Why you have to moan about the cost of a litre of milk is beyond me.
Just look about you, look how many farmers have given up cows in NC, has it also not come to your attention that the farmers are not so well equipped as you moaning lot.
to moan because food has gone up, bet you dont moan when you pay for golf or other luxuries moan to the cows and goat herds that have disappeared,. moan because your bread has gone up when the farms in NC have in previous years not had crops because of the drought.. Moaning brits again

GEROFF Geroff we weren't moaning. At least I wasn't, I merely pointed out it would be a long way to go to get a litre of milk, which incidentally I don't drink anyway!!

What I can add is, that the producers, i.e. the farmers have not had and increase!!
I buy my milk directly from the farm. They have found an increase in the animal feed, but the milk price stayed the same, so now their 'profit' is greatly reduced.

The government is considering a moaning tax. It will vary according to nationality with a bulk discount for Brits.
