Does anyone know an English speaking speech therapist?
A friend needs some help following a stroke and is currently in Lefkosa State Hospital.

Please e-mail or PM and I will forward details to my friends wife who is always at the hospital.

There might be some on the Greek side, but try contacting this organisation in the UK; they may be able to point you in the right direction.

I hope this helps.

I contacted my friend in UK who had a stroke a few years ago for advice on this and he suggests that there are Aphasia websites where therapy can be conducted online...... I googled it and as an example came up with this link

http://www.aphasia.com/products/talkpat ... ch-therapy

but there are many more options to explore. A real person is always better than talking to a machine but logically the machine is available 24/7 whereas the therapist is not so maybe the machine might accelerate the re-learning curve?

My friend is also a member of Maidstone Stroke Club in UK and I have attached their monthly newsletter for perusal.... not sure if there is something like that here but if not then maybe its time there was.....

If I get anymore information sent to me then I will forward it to you accordingly. Likewise if you need any further assistance or you want me to ask anything from the stroke club members then please don't hesitate to ask..... here's hoping for a speedy recovery of your friend

Thanks for the above info.
huggiesbob, problem is Nigel cannot use his hands to manipulate a keyboard at present but will pass info on to his wife for using later.
The major problem for now is the throat, (a) with speech and (b) unable to swallow and the early prognosis is at least 3 weeks and may be more for improvement.

Some more information that might be useful is that the Girne hospital has physiotherapy classes / facilities for stroke patients. This information was provided by a nurse that works there so may be worth pursuing.I have no idea if its free or if there's a charge.

The right sided suffers do have the worst of it, speech, swallowing and then the usual disabilities but other things your friend will likely need to source are:.

FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) devices such as the Bioness L300 which are pricey at over £4k in UK although there are cheaper alternatives (but not as good). These L300 devices are walking aids, the L200 are for hands.
Cardio vascular exercise regime for stroke survivors
Physiotherapy
and most importantly the inner strength to get better in small increments and for example.... if his right hand / arm is temporarily not working then improve how the left hand / arm functions.

I wish your friend well.
