someone should remind them of the law that states that anyone harming an anima,l is liable to a fine or improsonment or both. Surely the police know of that law, and as the owner of the dog must be held responsible, then the police CAN do something. Or don't they want to. Very sad. It must have been a really horrible thing to witness, and of course one has to be concerned for any children plahying in the street etc.

Shameful, but not surprising as they view animals as indespensible

With respect, I think you mean "dispensable" Mozgor.!!! And I do think that is a rather unfair generalisation.

My heart goes out to the people who cared for this stray animal and no doubt spent valuable time and money on it only to see it wantonly and cruelly killed. I have also seen a small pet dog mauled, but forunately not killed, by a Pit Bull Terrier type dog. People are afraid to excercise small dogs for fear of attack by uncontrolled large vicious dogs.

But it is not just animals that are at risk - children, the elderly, infirm and disabled are also liable to attack. They also create a climate of fear of all dogs among those who are already nervous of or dislike them

There seems to be a fashion (particularly but not exclusively among the expat population) for intimidating types of dog. Whether or not the Police are able or willing to act in an individual case, surely the time has come when pressure should be put on the authorities to outlaw the importation and breeding of proscribed dangerous dogs and other large and powerful animals. Apart fom anything else when the novelty wears off and these poor brutes are abandoned the stray dog popuation - currently mainly sad anda bit of a nuisance - will become positively dangerous.

I agree Rambling Rose, its a dangerous problem in the making. Dogs seem to be abandoned for a multitude of reasons. We took in a dog that had been lovingly cared for for 3 yrs, the owners moved from a house to an apartment and a new baby arrived, mum would not have dog inside, so was abandoned. It found its way back in a very sorry state. It already knew me so just settled in no trouble. The irony is that the father of the house heard of the outcome and called round with a sack of dog biscuits as a thankyou.
Big Hungry Dogs are another ballgame altogether. Don't know the Goverment Vets policy on dangerous dogs is or if they even have one.!

Yes Mel - so many reasons and sometimes it is very sad when someone who has become too old or ill to care for a beloved pet (often an adopted rescue dog) and has to move into unsuitable accommodation for animals (maybe in the UK) and cant re-home it.

But all too often it is the "A dog is not just for Christmas" syndrome and people take on a cuddly puppy without realising the work and expense involved when it grows into a large dog and just abandon it. I believe KAR has a schools education programme - but adults , including expats, also need educating about dog care and training and sometimes advice and assistance when they run into unexpected problems.

It is bad enough when it is a small friendly pet type dog, such as the uniquitious Cyprus terrier, but the larger more aggressive animals which we increasingly see will be both even harder to rehome (think of the meat bill alone!) and more dangerous when abandoned on the street and interbreeding with other strays.

I believe the TRNC Government does have dangerous dog legislation similar to the UKs but the problem is they dont have the resources to enforce it. And people get round the legislation by breeding ertzaz Pit Bulls - allyou have to do is cross a bulldog with a terrier! And not all large , heavy and potentially aggressive dogs are on the list.

There are limits to what we as expats can and should do to influence the local population and Government, but I consider it disgraceful how many expats are now introducing intimidating breeds as a status symbol
and those of us who care about both our adopted country and dogs should demonstrate our disapproval of this.
