driving south

I take my car south from time to time so that is not a problem, but does anyone know if I could take a friend's car? I suspect insurance is not a problem but possibly obtaining the 12 month 'police paper/mot' might be. Does the log book have to tie up with the driver's licence?

When we went last week for road tax, they asked for our driving UK licence and passport.

I would think it has to tie up otherwise people could just steal cars and take them South. We insure my brother for our car and he insures me for his but we had to go together to get the insurance with our UK diriving licences and as laptatony says, you have to produce your UK driving licence (if UK citizen) and passport to get the annual certificate (MOT?) for your car first. After doing all that, we can each take the other's car South.

Hi trooper no it doesnt have to tie up, my car is still in my dads friends name and i take it south all the time and insure it and things, they dont even ask about the log book name, mot or road tax from this side.

That being the case Tanyaahmet, you must be one in a thousand. We have never in 10 years been able to insure any of our cars without being able to produce UK driving licence and the log book to prove the car was in our name. We've never been asked to provide MOT though, nor have we been asked to show our passport, so this must be new.

As long as the owner has obtained the 'MOT' & you are on the insurance you can take someone's car over.

I dont know sophie because they check it all properly every time i get insured and they never even ask me about it, i asked once and the man in the insurance booth told me some one with a uk license can get insured on any car, if it is there or not, before i started taking my car i used my husbands family car which was when i asked about it.
