Hi,
I hope someone will be able to guide me. I'm looking for a butcher that has good quality, fresh meat who knows how to cut meat professionally. Can you recommend anyone?
Thanks in advance.

It helps people answer if you say where you are!

We always use yalcin on the way to catalkoy right hand side, they cut the meat quite thick and taste good, my husband is obsessed with doing bbq and he try's a lot of different places but yalcin is one of the best i think.

If near Karsiyaka the butcher in the square is excellent. Coffee shop on the corner on the main road, next to statue of Ataturk. Butcher is called Pasaoglu.

Ali Coban and Kibet, both in Karakum and both excellent butchers.

While I agree Kibet are the best of the bunch, we have yet to find a really decent butcher, the steaks are generally poor quality because they don't "hang" the beef as long as other countries. We will however try the butcher in this thread, often been past but never called in.

Thank you all for the replies.

JBA: The reason I didn't specify the location is because I don't mind going the extra stretch of road wherever a good butcher is.

Panchocat: Where is Ali Coban?

I can recommend the butcher opposite the Golden Lady in Alsancak, next to the shoe shop. We have had lovely fillet steaks from him amongst other things, plus he speaks good English if you need that too.

Dairy milk, Ali Coban is on the LHS heading into Girne from Catalkoy, before you get to the main strip of Karakum shops. He us a traditional butcher.
It's just before the turning that takes you down to Taners Terrace. My Cypriot neighbour recommended him when we first arrived, she has used him for years.
We have used Yalcin but the fillet steak was tough and inedible.
I am told that the butcher in Ozankoy also hangs his meat.

Kibet have fairly good meat and he does hang his meat but ask for meats that have been hung as I thing he also has unhung for the locals. The main butcher worked in London for some time so is familiar with English cuts of meat if you ask him

The butcher next to the old £ shop near the main roundabout in Girne has aged Steak upstairs , I've had average & very good from there, also Kibet I've had the same & the Pirk shop near Ileli in Alsancak has the odd Sirloin that DOES hit the spot but you have to look at any meat & it needs to look as dark as posable , that's when it's old also if its not quite that colour put it in a plate put some chopped garlic olive oil salt & pepper over it & leave it in the fridge until its going as dark as posable , darker the better , I've left it over a week before but 5 days is normally good if the steak is dark to start with. The garlic don't realy taste on the steak , I was told this by a Chef & it works & I always do mine like that .
Also the butcher about 1 mile b4 the Lapta strip on the left just past the big Starlibgbon the right if ya coming from Girne direction,
Main thing tho if its red don't buy it, the darker looking the better .

Forgot, leave the steak uncovered in the fridge so the air gets to it.

If you happen to be going over the border, there is a company called Wellgoods who have several shops including one in Nicosia. They sell American beef - their rib eye is fantastic quality. Not cheap but the best steak that we have ever bought in Cyprus. We normally buy a whole piece and cut it into steaks ourselves and freeze it. If you Google this company you will find that they have maps showing where their shops are.

Pork Shop also do excellent meat, as long as you order in advance he definitely gets the best beef roast, and his pork is the best I have tasted, Yalchin is also good, and I also favour Tempo in Karaoglanoglu for my mince, lamb chops etc, never try any of the new butchers, as I find as a regular you definitely get a better cut of meat, good luck, try them all and see which suits.

Directions to Wellgoods, Nicosia: Crossing the border at Metehan, turn right and follow through to the traffic lights at the t-junction, turn right. Straight across the roundabout with the 'rings' on it. Turn left just past the very large Greek Church. Turn left at the second set of traffic lights. Wellgoods is a couple of hundred yards along this road on your left.Personally I don't find the Nicosia shop as good as their Limassol one but, give it a try. They certainly have the US beef there and also NZ lamb.
