Orange light in the sky.

Did anyone see this bright orange light last night about 20.30? it was traveling east to west along the kyrenia mountains gaining height.
We had friends round but non of us could come up with what it could be, the nearest we could get was maybe it was a rocket launched from a southern Russian state, as the light was large and bright. It was not an aircraft just a large orange light.
I did go on to the internet and Google rocket launches in the middle East, the only launch I could find was one today from Kazakhstan.

Fascinating. I never saw anything,g but then I was tucked up safe and sound with my computer writing for KibKom Times, so obviously missed it. Are you sure it wa s not the setting sun???????? Seriously, sounds fascinating in the extreme. So who else saw it, and what might be the explanation. When you say 'orange' do you mean more like a fire, and how large was it, and how far away did you trhink. I guess no one took a photo? Or did they>?

Come on KibKomers, - share!

HI Marion it is hard to say, it was high, a plane had not long passed over from Ercan but this was a lot higher but still very large.
It was not the sun as it was a lot smaller and traveling in the wrong direction.
As my Russian friends smoke we were sat on the patio, thats how we managed to spot it.
It is a pity none of us had a camera handy to film it.

Ref msg 5/5 above - not sure. Ercan Airport telephone number is +90 392 600 5000. You could then ask for ATC, I guess??

it is odd that is was climbing, which discounts shooting stars/meteors.
Maybe a military plane using re-heat/afterburners?

Philoz.

The orange light was to large for a fighter planes after burner, I would say it was three times the size of our planes coming over the mountain but at least twice the hight.
We saw it travel along the mountains towards Famagusta gaining hight all the time slowly, there must have been some high cloud as it disappeared for a short time.
Then it seemed to climb very quick and was gone.
This all happened with it passing our flat in Girne gaining hight, for 1.5 minutes just enough time to get the Russian children out to see it.
I did not want to put this in my first post but the light had a strange shape it was not round but more a triangular shape with a lighter yellowish edge.
After saying this my bottle was still half empty???

Surely someone else must have seen it???? Without any other logical explanation, I guess we are all thinking UFO (whether the bottle washalf empty or half full!!!)

Personally I think any article should be written by Karmel. Come on, young man, write me something about the event, how you felt, were there any grey little men parachuting down, was anyone abducted, and aolso how many glasses of wine.

On a serious note, I do not know who Sculley may be (or is Karmels Mulder) but I have other friends hwo reckon they HAVE seen UFO's , so maybe, maybe, maybe it really was. No one has come up with any feasible explanation, but equally no one else has reported as seeing it.

It may be the thread of the week, cos it just might be a case of extra-terrestrial!

So come on Karmels, what do YOU think it was!? And how about writing a letter for me at KKT 'Is Cyprus on the UFO trail?'

But one must always tremember that lovley quote 'There are more thing s in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, Horatio"

(and strangely as I write there are strange lights in the sky below me - white, orange, and..........................oh ye,s they are fireworks!'

Thank you for that owl lady.
If this had not been witnessed by my five Russian guests then it could be taken with a pinch of salt, we all tried to guess what it was, it was not a plane, it was not a UFO it was more like the light from a rocket going into space. Reports of UFO tend to move very fast. This was traveling faster than a plane and gaining height.
Marions, as for your comments, why should I do your job when you are far better at reporting the local news than I, and you get paid for it??
This is where I rest my case. Unless Marion has something constructive to add, rather than smiling faces, and yes I do know waddo.

Could it have been a Chinese lantern? They glow orange and rise up into the sky.

Valid point Karmels but I do so like firest hand reports, and this appeared to be turning into potential sci -fi.

Reading other comments, one could but wonder if this was something emanating form Akrotiri, the air force base in the south. Maybe they fire the occasional rocket. I am afraid however, that I would not know WHERE to start to get the truth on that one!

And why no more smiley faces - we need some laughter in our lives with the weather of the past few days.

I would still love to hear of anyone else who has witnessed this. It DOES sound like a rocket, but from where? Turkey? The South?

I would also guess it was a chinese lantern. Quite popular out there at the moment with locals in letting these off, saw one in Lefkosa 2 months ago and it did gain some real height before it disappeared. I would not known what it was until local pointed it out and explained.

Soner.

Chinese lantern do not climb as heigh as the flight path from Ercan, this light was a lot higher than that so you can rule out the lantern.

Marions.
As for rockets from the South that is a non starter the british forces do not fire rockets from their bases.

As stated earlier the light was traveling along the mountain from Turkey towards Larnaca.

I've seen similar 3 times in the last few years. Twice over UK and once over Spain.
One sighting over London, moving fast and high then quickly rising. Another was even more fascinating, 3 in perfect triangle formation. It looked like a single massive spaceship!
The third one, in Spain, was the giveaway! It was launched by my Daughter over the sea.

Chinese Lanterns!

At night they become an optical illusion, seeming much farther away than they are, looking massively brighter and higher than they are. They can also change direction and rise or fall quite fast due to air currents or over rising or falling ground.

Apparently they are now the cause of most 'UFO' sightings reported to the Police, or calls to ATC's.

I agree that they should be banned as a dangerous fire risk and to use them in Cyprus is utter madness. Imagine a still lit one landing on a forested, hard to get to, mountain!

Owl. You describe exactly what I have seen that is why I asked if it could have been a Chinese lantern, I saw them for sale in NC at Christmas time think it was 1001 shop and was surprised to see them on sale there, I passed a remark to my hubby about that.

Owl Lady.

Yes we do know each other, having lived in the village for so many years. I just don't know how it can be explained as we all saw the same light.

To the others who are asking questions.
It looked like it was moving slow, but as it was gaining height at the same time it did not move very far through the shy before it vanished, this could have been due to high cloud, as it was dark we were unable to see any cloud formation, I would say if you were looking at the mountains it would seem like aprox 20 miles in distance.

And the last word to Marions is, using just smillies is a sign of no comment?? or a lack of understanding and comment or just posting for postings sake. kudos + stars.

Fascinating. Trouble is two of the videos are marked 'private' and another 'this does not exist' but the ones I did see were confusing. Lights dancing in the sky, changing shape and direction - hardly UFO's, but just what are they.

I have just watch one of the videos, the problem was the person taking the pictures kept moving from one side to the next.
But when I re run this it was very much like what we saw but with only one light.
This will never be resolved, as myself and my friends will most likely never see this again, and as no one else saw it in Cyprus on the night it is a closed case.
BUT I will never forget it.

From details given I would say it was chinese lanterns, although they are illegal in Hong Kong I saw lots of them while there over the new year holidays.
