Well measure the bed before you go - there are some very odd sizes to be had in Cyprus and it's a bugger when you get it home only to find double is not what we call double etc....

Re: Buying new mattress
We were in Olguns in Lefkosa recently and they have an excellent selection of mattresses and pillows upstairs that you can try out. They have all sorts, pocket sprung, memory foam etc etc. Not cheap cheap, but there again a good quality mattress in the UK isn't cheap either!
Ergun Olgun the owner tends to base himself at the Lefkosa shop and is very helpful and certainly knows his stuff. They also have a smaller furniture shop in Karakum but the selection isn't as good there and can't remember if they have beds there.

I would also recommend Olgun. We bought a mattress there a number of years ago and it is still as comfortable as when new. Not cheap though was around 500 euros back then.

Have just bought a super orthopaedic double 140x190 at Ali Edip Lapta (one of the occupied shops!) going West along the Lapta strip it is a short distance on the right after the 50 speed restriction and Silver Rocks. They do a range of sizes and qualities and much cheaper than equivalent in UK.

Have they (any shop that is) started to import soft mattresses. Hard mattresses or even firm mattresses give me hell and that was all we could find when we moved here. We need a second one soon and I'd rather not go to the expense of a Tempur mattress again if I can help it.

Re: Buying new mattress
Did a lot of research on this some time ago and as others have said, the only place to go is Olgun's.
I bought a pocket sprung king size around £700 and worth every single penny. Never thought i would ever find a comfortable mattress in Cyprus but i was very happily proven wrong - like sleeping on a cloud!
Their shop in karakum directly opposite china bazaar has lots to choose from and try. Can't recommend them highly enough, superb products and excellent service.

Journey1, how to dispose of your old mattress.
I don't know where you are but here in Ozankoy people regularly put old mattresses, sofas, fridges etc etc next to the rubbish skips and by the next day they have gone.

Thanks Numbers, I'll certainly visit them. Sleeping on a cloud sounds wonderful, angel I'm not though!!
Off topic, but I agree with Blue Butterfly. So far this year we have placed on the side of the road, a plastic garden table and 6 chairs, a further 4 garden chairs, the former went within two hours. We've also placed by the side of our bin, 3 broken DVD players (I stuck a note on saying they didn't work) a slightly dodgy fax machine, a Video player and sundry other ropey (but safe) electrical equipment. It always goes within a day or two.
