Had a letter in the u.k. to attend jury service.
Difficult living two thousand miles away.
has anyone else had this and if so how did they handle it.

I think you can ask to be 'let off' but can only do it so many times. I guess that the fact you have received it means that you are still registered as living in UK. Perhaps 'google' the answer.

We have googled it and it gives reasons such as sickness, pre booked holidays, death etc.
Our concern is that we don't want to say we live in another country in case it threatens our NHS entitlement.

This post was about n.h.s. entitlement.
Most people would agree that it is a massive injustice to people like myself, who have paid into the system all there lives, now choose to live abroad for more then six months and as a result may loose that entitlement.
It is perfectly valid be excluded from jury service when you are not in the country.
I guess paddywhack if he is out of the u.k. and needs treatment back in the u.k. holds up his hands, explains his circumstances to his hospital and insists he pays for that treatment.
Good man (or woman) the country needs more people like you!!!!

Why not just tell them you are enjoying a long holiday in Cyprus and will be unable to attend unless they pay your fares it must be a quite normal reason to be excused (as you can prove that you are out of the country it should be a simple matter)... BTW in fact it's not certain you will be called upon again... some people get called once only and never again...

On another note... I'd be more inclined to forget about your UK NHS entitlements unless you count delays, stroppy receptionists, MRSA and doctor's fatal errors amongst your dearest desires... the service and treatment here is far superior for a fraction of the cost - yes you would need to pay - but it's a drop in the ocean compared to the UK and no waiting... unless you are happy to expire on a waiting list to see a UK 'consultant' that is.... If I'm taken ill - I'd be glad to here and not in the postcode lottery.

Thornby all you need is a letter from a Doctor to say you are not fit enough for jury service and you will be excused. But they can call you up a few times in the same year, and then you are excused for the next 10 years once you have served.

p.s. You can also be excused if you work for the emergency services. e.g. Police, nurse etc

My experience is that if you have a prebooked hol etc you are allowed, but only once, to request a more convenient date. However you eventually have to appear for Jury Duty.(I've been called 3 times within 7 years)
I have friends who live in other countries and have had the same letter - they had to contact the official contact given and explain they were living abroad. After that they were excluded from duty.
If you are on the electoral register you will be called so unless you qualify for any of the listed exemptions you are required to attend.
There surely must be folks resident here in North Cyprus who have been called that could give you the benefit of their experience - maybe they will pm you.
Whatever you do though don't ignore it!

simply say your on a 90 day holiday in cyorus where you come once a year .
Your right with your NHs if you have paid in why should you give up your entitlement when your stamps been paid .
Slightly different with a few cyp family's I know that fly back for NHs treatment and don't live or contribute to UK .
I also know a Kurd who has been in the UK legally for 4 years and rents my friends garage .
His father who has never been to the UK is ill and coming over next week for NHs treatment having never paid a penny in.

There are reasonable excuses and not being in the UK at the time will be one of them

Jury Service,tell them you are self employed and your business would fold if you were not there.I did and they never bothered me again.NHS,We lived TRNC for 8+ years and no we did NOT tell our doctor and no I dont feel at all guilty.I paid my dues from the age of 15 when I started work.

If you have left the UK permanently as I have, why worry about the NHS? OK you paid in for years. What for? to go back and wait for months for an appointment and services. Save the air fare and if you have no where to stay, accommodation costs. Pay and get it done here tomorrow!!

Owl lady, that would be the case with most medical conditions.
Pay for the treatment here.
Things of a more serious nature falling back on the n.h.s. would be for me the way I would handle it.

Looks like the common concensus of opinion on how to handle this is to lie! Sounds about right for the EU to me. You could always take the problem to your local UKIP rep, as they are so flushed with success at the moment they may even be interested!
