Info re maps and border crossing

Posting on behalf of visitors from Italy hopefully coming in two or three weeks and probably staying in Ozankoy area (2 adults and grandchildren aged 9 and 11)

Can anyone kindly tell us:

Where can we get maps of both North (particularly Karpas) and South Cyprus? I think the gentleman known as "Dutch Crusader" used to do some on line, but dont know how to get them?

Which is the best and most convenient Border crossing, and directions from Ozankoy (say start at Erdener)

They are a bit nervous about driving on the left and probably coach trips would be better for Karpas and the South. Does anyone know of and can recommend any??

They have some good maps in the Tourist Information Centre in the Harbour (top end near the place the African Queen sails from).

If your friends are getting a hire car, most are not allowed into the South so that could be your first problem. I would suggest Metahan is the closest crossing.

Dutch is no longer with us I am afraid to say. He passed away last week and I do not think his maps were as up to date as your friends would require. They were good maps but he took lots of complaints for actually selling them instead of giving them away after all the work he put in on them - sad.

For short trips, Google Earth and plan the journey. For long trips you can get free maps in the Harbour as stated above but they are not very detailed. Cyprus is a place to get lost in and enjoy the trip - take pleanty of water and stay cool, have fun.

A couple of years ago, I bought a map of Cyprus in WH Smiths in the UK so perhaps this couple could try their local bookshop. It was a map of the whole island and included the north.

For trips to karpaz etc call Libby. We went to karpaz last week and it was great. Visited olive oil factory, villages, golden beach, churches and mosques. Lunch by the sea was included. Very good tour guide as well. He knows a lot about the areas we visited. Libby(cyprus premier) 05338421383

I recently purchased a NavKing Light and the Cyprus GPS maps/software that goes with it from Eranav in Girne. I fully admit that I have yet to master this gadget - as you do need to have knowledge of Turkish to some extent or to have an English/Turkish dictionary with you if you are out on the road. It is not a TomTom but it is similar and the new software update (Apr 2014) is a distinct improvement over the original model. I have found the best way to use it so far - till I learn it better - is to find where you are going on Google Earth and use the co-ordinates instead of place/street names. It gets it right 99% of the time and when its wrong it is the user that made the mistake to start with - why I wanted to go to a place in Lefkosia via the Austrailian Embassy is quite beyone me but I put the details in so it was me who got it wrong - lol. It also has the handy speed camera warnings on any route you programe in!

If you have used TomTom in its early days then you will remember "Bitching Betty", you get her as well........

Still under trial but so far very happy with it.

The best map we have ever found is the Rough Guide Road Map - which is also tear-proof and water-proof...

Thanks for the suggestions. I am afraid there is no way I can afford GPS which seems a bit ott for such a small Island!

Carrier bag: What is it the Metahan crossing like. Could we be driven to this side of the crossing walk across and get a bus/hire car/taxi the other without two far a walk for elderly people and children??

Simple. If they have a smart phone, they can download the Kibkom KibApp for free. It has maps of all borders. They can also use their phone to navigate to whichever boarder they want to go to, as well as sightseeing places and much more. http://www.kibapp.com

The Metahan crossing is the main Nicosia (Lefkosia) crossing and you cannot walk across it (at least I don't think you can). You could go to the Beyarmadu crossing near Larnaca and part in the village of Beyarmadu and get a local North Cyprus taxi to take you where you want to go. Hope this helps.

You can walk across any of the crossings, some though are a long walk, the longest is Lerda Palace in Nicosia.

I think the best maps here are as cover seen below. they sell them in tourist centres and other places, some restaurants They do three - red= the whole island, green=the Karpaz, pinky orange=the old bit of Nicosia. There is also a wealth of information on the back. All available in English, German and Russian.
