Lived here for over 6.5 years and never felt the need for a gennie. Even in the worst power cuts of 2006 when the two turbines broke down at Tecnicek just got on with life.

I think that is the main reason you have had no response, most of our friends have just shrugged shoulders, why should we create a very short term demand for generators that the only people who will gain are the relatives of the Kib Tek workers who will be selling the things.

Hopefully the government will see sense anyway and if the workers do sabotage the supply the military will be sent in immediatly to deal with them. After January they should have workers ready to move in anyway.

'What size generator do I need '

Not sure 'cyprusishome' answered the question!!

Add together the wattages of the equipment you want to use (always shown on each piece of equipment) and at least double/treble that for a generator size.

Actually I have answered the question - you do not need one for an event that may not even happen so why waste money!

You might also want to bear in mind that a noisy generator is not going to make you too popular with the neighbours. Here in Lefkosa our neighbour's generator, when it's working, keeps us awake at night ... even with our windows closed

Agree with Cyprusishome. Owned our place for about 4 years, lived here or 3. Never used a generator. However our neighbour's generator drives me insane during the day and stops me sleeping at night and they don't know when the power comes back on so carry on using it long after it's necessary. The odd occasion when it might be useful is only every about every 2/3 years, other than that the power is only off for a few hours at most.

Well I can disagree a bit. Only lived here since September 2011 and already lost nearly £200 of food in the freezer when the power went off for 3 days in Jan. Now looking to another extended power strike. Am actively looking for a generator. I did post earlier if any one knew where they sold generators but only one reply which was to ask a generator mechanic if he knew
As I got older I congratulated myself on my tolerance..... Now I realise I just don't give a "ooops"

Well we lived there for just over 8 years and after just 2 weeks there.I bought a generator.I bought a 5.5 kw which coped with everything. No Pool.I should have bought 7.5 kw to make the gennys life a bit easier.Dont touch ANY chinese ones.Aksa and Genpower are assembled in Turkey. They use american and Japanese engines coupled to Italion alternators.Just joined Kibcom to help.If it gets like 44 i am off

I think what some of the posters here are forgetting is that for some there could be a serious health implications in not having a form of cooling/lights /running water/telephonic contact in emergency..

What I did a few years ago was to buy an invertor which charges from the mains . Until this January that was adequate to keep lights and frig going and charge computer and mobile. I chose this for its silence.

However it has limited charged span. What I have now done is buy a generator which will charge the invertor during the day so I can use the (silent) invertor at night. It will mean I shall have to use fans rather than air con in the bedroom (only room I have it) but at least I wont risk a fall if all goes dark suddenly, and I can have a cooling shower.

Expensive but I can afford it because I dont have a pool, which is far more expensive and environmentally damaging.

Hey Rigsby. Just to assure you that if ever this became like the bad side of Cyprus 44- we will ALL be off!

don't worry - I am sure it won't happen, not while soner is in charge! Keep posting and keep giving us of your valuable experience. Just wish I had bought a generator when I came. Can;'t afford it now!
