Residency renewal over 60's

We are both over 60 and our residency is coming up for renewal. What is the advice for over 60's now, the goalposts seem to change all the time.?

Its personal choice. I am over 60 and did not renew my residency last October. Since then I have left the country and gone South numerous times without any problem. It is apparently a "concession" by the government at present which we all know could change at any time.

There have been numerous threads on this topic, some say get it to be on the safe side, others like me don't bother. The only time you would have needed it is if and when you renew your driving licence, but a letter from the muchtar will now suffice.
That is my take on it, others may disagree, personally speaking why pay 600/700 tl when you don't need it?

Perhaps the BRS, which has elected itself to represent ex-pats to the TRNC Government, might wish to seek the official line and publish it. The proposed 'white card' residency requirements may well throw a spanner in the works if you do not have the minimum 5 years and current residency stamps in your passport? Could all change later today, tomorrow, next day - whenever.

As this 'concession' is not available in writing, it is a matter of personal choice. As Tom has said - if you want a White Card, you won't get one under the present ruling of 5 years residency. If you want citizenship (which may or may not happen, the same argument. yOu must prove residency for a certain number of years. If you are happy to come and go, and maybe have a property somewhere else that is 'home' , then take a chance.

or me - if it is not in writing, I don't trust it, as it is difficult enough to trust what IS in writing!

I know but, I am under 60 and went south for a few hours 1 day after my residency expired and got fined, my paperwork was in and being processed at the time, I was only late putting my paper work in because I couldn't get hold of the Catalkoy Muktar for my letter. When I came back across the border I was given a stamp on the white paper with 30 days written on it.

The law is the law, and unfortunately if you are under 60 and fail to apply for residency within the date requested, then you wil be subject to fines. I think they give you the 30 days to give you time to sort things out.

The concession applies only to over 60's, but as I say, whilst it may be convenient, it does mean that no permanent residencyis likely to be handed out to anyone without the appropriate number of years of residency . But if a person does not want that, then fine.

Also with the way the law changes form government to government, one can still come unstuck even when obeying the minutae of the law. But this is not the only country to which this applies.

Her indoors & myself are both over 60! There is no way we will not renew our temp residency in October. From what the local people in authority say, if you do not then see what happens if you have an accident etc! You will also not be allowed to renew drivers licence,Mujtars letter or not! Is it worth it for a few lira?

Deniz1: as somebody has already said, you do not need residency to renew your driving licence if you are over 60. A friend has just renewed his - took his passport plus the muhktar's paper - no problem at all. He is 61 and his residency ran out last year.

I would always renew. Hey, this is TRNC... if they decide that they need to make a few extra bob then they could just decide to fine everyone who has not renewed and back date it as well. As Becker says, is it worth the risk for a few lira?

Becker & ailletoo .. Gather all that you require to renew ..
Go to immigration & before you hand over your money ask them is it necessary to renew as you are over 60 ..
We did exactly that & saved ourselves 1000TL .. Who knows the rules may change .. But at the moment take advantage ..

The plot thickens. We have now been told that as we are over 60, if we do decide to renew, we don't need to go to the police station first, as we don't need blood test etc. Is this right? Also the amount to pay seems to vary with who you ask. Arrrgh!

Squeaker. My advise to you would be to address your questions to those who can best answer them. In this instance, the police in Girne or Lefkosia. On this forum you will only ever get opinions.

It is not an opinion .. Go direct to immigration and ask there .. It you are over 60 & are renewing it is as simple as that ..

Our neighbours did it first & when they told us what transpired, we did it .. Not an opinion .. Go & see for yourself ..
Immigration not the police ..

harita.... Thanks for clearing that up. Of course immigration would be the better place to go to. Just thought that if the Girne police could answer then it would save a trip to Lefkosia.

This morning we had a Friends of SPOT meeting to discuss forthcoming events (do support the Raft Race and the Acqua Day - more news to come!) and this over 60's thing was discussed a little.

My advice to any of you is , never mind what any of us write - any media, or organization (BRS warns not to be too trusting on this spoken concession of the over 60's) but talk at Government level about it. Immigration is the best place to go. There is a lady there who speaks really good English and who will advise.

~We all know that things can change on a daily basis here, but if you have it in writing you have a starting point. There is NOTHING in w riting about the over 60's concession, so please, I would advise everyone to speak to the right quarters. As a writer I do agree with the Buddha 'Never believe anything that is written - test it - even what is written by me!'

It would be dreadful if anyone believing what others have written or said about this so called consession were to come unstuck. Always best to have in writing, and for those here 'permanently' go get that stamp in your passport to be on the safe side. It is realloy cheap an dmeans piece of mind and legality.

If you intend not renewing your residency, please check your car and home insurance, you may find in the small print you will not be covered. If in doubt check with your insurance company.

I do not know how true this is , but if it were would that not mean that all the Expats that do not live here permanently, & have a car sitting here insured on TRNC plates are not covered then, just an observation.

As nobody else has mentioned it can I point out that when over 60s go to Immigration (I confirm you don't need to go to the police) you can ask for 2 years instead of 1. It costs twice as much but you get a hassle free year.

It's been almost 2 years since we renewed residency and we have never had a problem. This year we renewed our driving licenses and had no problems doing that either. All we needed was a mukhtars letter, 2 photographs and a copy of our passport.

Every time we have gone out and come back we have received a 90 day visa without having to ask.

We went South on Wednesday, Customs guy looked for our residency coming back over (ran out on 26th June), I said over 60, young lad said really?, made my day and put the same stamp on paper as with residency, no days stipulated.
