Water Supply Quality
Does anyone know if there is a law forcing a developer who has an absolute monopoly on water supply to provide water of a decent standard? Our developer is obtaining water from a dirty well next to a limestone quarry and forcing us to pay 10tl a tonne for it (We believe he pays around 1tl).

Why can't you go to your local Mukhtar for help? Does the developer have the necessary permits to extract the water and sell on. Maybe a visit to the District office.

Been there, done that. And the Mayor, Police and the Government. They all say he can't do that, but do nothing to stop him. If people make a fuss he just cuts their water off Nice ManDalartokat wrote:Why can't you go to your local Mukhtar for help?

Sadly not allowed as this is against forum rules. And I would prefer others not to name the developer as this will get the thread pulled (again)Dalartokat wrote:What a dreadful situation...name the developer.

Is it for your own personal supply? Would it be possible to get your own tanker from a water supply company of your own choosing?

Re: Water Supply Quality
Sadly not possible. The developer did not put any individual tanks on our site, and only a few tiny tanks on the development next door. He maintains control via cisterns feeding water to his herd of cash cows (or not, depending on whether we have been naughty). He sucked us in and milks us at will. Thank god I am only there for some of the time.kedikat2903 wrote:Is it for your own personal supply? Would it be possible to get your own tanker from a water supply company of your own choosing?

Could you install your own 5 ton water tank and have it plumbed into your system, you could then have your own supplier of water.

Have you had the water checked at the laboratory?
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

This seems the best idea or maybe you could apply to have your own well sunk.Tojo wrote:Could you install your own 5 ton water tank and have it plumbed into your system, you could then have your own supplier of water.

If there were an easy answer to this we would have already used it. This is a development of apartments where we would not be allowed tanks, even if it were practical to do so.

10TL per Ton is less than I was getting charged in Karsiyaka, I was being charged 100TL for 7 ton. Time to change my supplier methinks!

Is it usable water? Would you be happy to pay for dirty water, heavy in limescale? Do you have a choice?tomsteel wrote:We have tankered water and the charge - ten TL per t.
I would pay more than 10tl for decent water!

Re: Water Supply Quality
As far as I am aware all water in TRNC is hard water (heavily limescaled) but as far as clean is concerned, any dirt particles in the water should fall to the bottom of the tank when it settles, and I have enough sediment in my tank bottom to tell me that the water I have delivered is far from clean, but there again I wouldnt dream of drinking it, there is always a residue floating to the top of the tank when I look but I would assume that most tankered water would have this, anybody know any different?

That is dreadful considering you have been in touch with all the relevant authorities, inclined to agree with Owl Lady. People's health being put at risk, especially elderly and children.

In the main it is the colour of urine. The colour is not a real indicator of our problems. It is the huge amount of lime in the water. No surprise when the well is next to a limestone quarry. Somebody has posted a map showing the well and I can't believe anyone would consider that location safe for human use. Profit is far more important than people to our developer.

Re: Water Supply Quality
I would rather doubt that your water supply would be actually bad for your health, as I said in my previous post the water I have delivered isn't exactly the cleanest on the island however it isnt necessary the water supply itself to blame where cleanliness is concerned, the supply underground should be pretty clean however the pump system that sucks it up and the tanker that temporarily stores it can be the source of contamination, if it is contamination you have. The heavy lime content that may exist due to the limestone bed of the aquifer could be the cause of the colour I suppose, however filtering might help with that, and a softening of the water could be achieved by salt dozing with the use of a water softner unit, these are available in most water conditioning shops, I am considering this for my hard water problem, and my water is pumped from a well in Karsiyaka, nowhere near a limestone quarry. As far as I am aware even people on mains water have the hard water problem with limescale formation etc, yours might just be that bit worse than normal. I doubt if legal procedings against your supplier would stand up in court (especially the ones out here)

Aitchie, You are confusing normal hard water with the situation we are dealing with. Would you extract water from a limestone quarry? Hard water that could be dealt with via a simple water softener would be lovely!

OK your situation goes further than I am aware, however as I said previously, it is not the quarry that is the problem as the water is underneath and never touches the quarry itself.

And the lime never leaches into the water table?
