Sport - 2014 Commonwealth Games - Day One
The 25-year-old gave England a dream start to Glasgow 2014 by coming home in front.
Canada's Kirsten Sweetland took silver with England's Vicky Holland clinching a surprise bronze.
“I have so many people to thank for this,” said a tearful Stimpson, who was not picked for London 2012.
“They have got me through and this is awesome. And to share the podium with Vicky is awesome too.
“This is not just my medal, it’s lots of people’s medals. The crowd were amazing, no matter what country we were from.
“I’ve seen my family and they are already crying. It’s awesome that they got to see me in a championship race after missing out last time.”
The leading group of six began to splinter towards the end of the penultimate lap of the 10-kilometres run as Stimpson took the lead.
As the contenders fell away, only Holland and Sweetland could stay with her.
Holland dropped off a few hundred metres from the line, leaving Stimpson and Sweetland to fight it out.
Almost within sight of the line, Stimpson made her break and the 25-year-old from Oldbury in the West Midlands pulled away to take victory
