Help !
Hi
I'm hoping I can find some advice/help here please- I have a dilemma !
I am an English born son of a TRNC citizen, now deceased. Last year I applied to the consulate in London for permission to marry in the TRNC. I attended the consulate with my partner and was duly issued the relevant paperwork which I sent to our wedding organiser at Korineum, our venue.
When the documents were sent to the local registrar 's office my permission to marry was revoked and after going to the minister for the interior, the refusal was upheld. This was last Thursday , we are/were to be married on the 14th august.
After exploring other options, we tried marriage through the Anglican Church, St Andrews, but the civil authorities again refused.
So my dilemma is- if I am able to get married on the island I have to obtain citizenship. The London consulate have told me they will not process the application as it has to go to theTRNC . So, can anyone help with information with regard to a fast track application, documentation required , where to go, fees etc. The Trnc consul told me himself it was possible but we have one week. We arrive on the 7th august.
I'm 52 so hopefully no military obligations. I hold only a UK passport.
Many thanks
Hassan

Re: Help !
One the wedding planners might be able to help you her,e but ou seem to be running out of time. I think (and I say, 'think' ) it is because you are the son of a Cypriot, and therefore need to be a citizen. But I expect you will have to have a blood test before you can maryr here, so your one week left might not be enough. You could wlel also be liable for military service if you get your kimlik card.
Can't the London office giv eyou proper details?
What other sin you rposition do is to do the legal bit in U.K and then come out here and have a blessing or some such.
Sorry not very helpful, but really I think you have very little time left. There are lawyers out here who help, but again, very little time. It seems you may not be able to have a wedding on 14th August but I don't want to be a pessimist. I will try to see if a weddingplanner can comment here for you.

Re: Help !
Hi Marion
Yes, you are right-it is because I am the son of a Cypriot. I knew nothing of a Cyprus until I repatriated my father in 2004. I have holidayed there frequently since.
The distressing part is that I raised the issue of my heritage on four different occasions with the consulate in London and on every occasion was told it wouldn't t be a problem. I don t think they would have issued the relevant paperwork otherwise. Since taking the matter up with them they have been quite dismissive.....
We do have an option to marry here, but after 29 years and 3 children it was the day we wanted. ! Shame...
I m pretty sure my military obligation ceased at 50, so hopefully that's ok.
The other problem is I speak no turkish! Hence me posting on here!
I know I'm clutching at straws but any advice would be most appreciated !
Thank you

Re: Help !
One of the prfoblems does seem to be that where the authorities are concerned - London to TRNC, the left hand doe snot kow what the right hand is doing (or wanting0.
Such a pity tha tyou have been left with so little time.
If you have been together so long, (and I am probably being a bit out of order here), why not get all the paper work done and then marry NEXT year on your 30th anniversary. I assume the date of 14th August has a significance.
I have asked one of my wedding planner friends if she can throw any light onto this, but nothing happens here quickly, and tomorrow is a holiday (again)
You could still have a celebration at the Golf Colurse but that would have no legality. Have you asked the golf course (Hulya I think , or Lindsey) on suggestions?
As to the London office being 'dismissive' it is probably because they are now embarrassed at having given you incorrect advice.
I feel so sorry fo ryou, as I c an see you have set your hearton this, and now you cannot jump the final hurdle. There maybe a way round, but I don't think they do special licences here.

Re: Help !
As to National Service, I can confirm that you do not have to do it if over 48 years of age.

Re: Help !
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there is no quick fix to this problem. The rules are that if either party to the marriage have any Turkish Cypriot parents then you must obtain a citizenship before that marriage can take place. I have tried my hardest to fight this rule with those in power but this is one rule that will not go away. You can apply for citizenship in London as i have another person doing that at the moment but it will take a few months because of the paperwork they need to collect.
I am so so sorry that the news could not be better. Most London born Cyps tend to do the legal part in the UK and then come here for a blessing and to be honest i think that is your only option.
If you want to contact me direct for a chat you can call me from the UK on 0203 2393567 or Email weddingsnorthcyprus@gmail.com

Re: Help !
Thanks Soner and Weddings north Cyprus. It must be disappointing news to the man, but..........................as to National Service, for the oldies and ancient, I know that if someone had done National Service in U.K they did not have to do military service here. That would have applied to my husband, which is good because initially he was going to apply for citizenship at the age of 80, and would have become the oldest potato peeler in the business! Can you imagine him climbing ropes!!!
Seriously, it does seem a strange thing that the law is not changed for anyone born in the U.K. who may have Cypriot blood in them to have to become a citizen before they can get married here, when anyone else born in U.K with any other nationality's blood in them can come. But equally tyhere are challenges for any Turk who wants to get married here. So rules is rules, and strange and daft though they may seem, we are stuck with them.
I feel really sorry for the poster, but DO talk with wedinnorthcyprus. I am sure she canj guide you more.
I guess you need to tlak seriously with Korineum, and if you have paid deposits it can be a problem, unless you merely postpone?????????????????????? Again, you need to talk to them.
Good luck.

Re: Help !
Hi all
I would like to thank you for the advice given.
Just to let you know we have arranged to be married in the uk before we leave. After your comments we have realised we really had no other options and have decided to make the best of it! We are sure that, as every year, we will have a wonderful time.
Thanks again !
