Rottweilers on the loose this morning

Many folks will remember the terrifying time I had with Dolly and the Rottweiler. This morning, 7.00, 2 Rotties were loose on the left-side of the ravine going up towards Old Milos. We turned tail, back round the bend, and with Dolly behind my legs, I got close to the recently erected wire fence. The Rotties came thundering round the bend -the smaller one stopped on seeing my stick. The thickset, big one, charged at us, but after a few heavy whacks on the head, retreated, but still followed closely until we reached the playground. Yet again, it was a frightening experience. If the owner of these dogs reads this, or someone tells him, please, please, don't let your dogs run loose. This area is a favourite morning walking place for several small dogs, and owners who can no longer manage the mountain climb.

Can the police be called about these dogs. I thought since the microchipping law was brought in, it was illegal to allow your dogs to roam free, and when they are caught a fine is issued. Could be wrong though.

Lor51, that would be most of our villages dogs then "roaming free!" A fine is issued if any dogs aren't micro chipped! (Or a spell in prison if they find out who the owner is.)

The operative word there was "IF" the owner is found,as they probably aren't chipped any way!

Police, Mayor, Muchtar and the local Beleyedisi - I would flood them all! It sounds like a really terrifying experience and I would hate to have to cope with it.
When you think more about it the question is why on earth do so many walkers, with or without dogs ,need a stout stick with them? I doubt that it is solely for the terrain!

I thought the law was no dogs in the street without a lead! Can someone verify or deny that. Can't remember where I heard it, or maybe KAR can confirm. The only dogs allowed to roam (again as I understand it are those tagged.)

And I would have thought that to allow rottweillers or similar to roam free is way out of order. Terrifying fo r most other dog owners. Or if they are off th e lead the owner should be with them.

But can someone state what the law actually is (calling KARon this one!)

Marion there are no departments within the council that deal with dogs.
The available council workers have to do the job.
If there was a law of some kind there is no department to enforce it.
This dog running wild attacking other dogs and maybe people will carry on, if you report it it will be a family member of a family member who's cousin is the Muktar of the area and nothing will be done.
People who have chosen to live in the TRNC should remember if you walk your dog be it on a lead or not, you have no rights and if another dog attacks your family pet there is no body to turn to for help.
Here dogs are for hunting or guarding the house chained to a tree 90% of the time.
Were you walk your dog is your choice, if you think there is a problem in the area get in the car and choose a different walk, it is not safe to think this track I have used for x number of years will stay the same.

I am a dog owner and we drive to different locations near to our location, one is the old runway at Catalkoy there are 4 or 5 different walks to follow.
I am sure in the Lapta area there are also some good walks to be found that are safe.

Well said! It took me 2 days when we moved from the green hills of yesiltepe to the centre of Catalkoy I was the actual pain walking my dogs from the village to the mountain. I upset every dog chained in the garden as I was passing their territory and terrified the people walking in the street. Now we go via Van to the mountain and hopefully upset nobody, and I hope our neighbours realise we have the attitude they are our dogs but we do not impose them on our neighbours who we understands treat their dogs very differently. There are too many people who think love me love my dog BUT I do feel due to the breed involved someone should make someone aware these dogs are running loose as a human could get seriously hurt

Pepper spray is not available in the TRNC and it is also ilegal to have or use it.

[quote="karmels"]Marion there are no departments within the council that deal with dogs.
Are you sure about this Karmels. I have twice had Catalkoy Beleydire come to my house with a local complainer to ask my assistance in catching a tagged dog that used to walk with me and mine, I also fed and watered her, so they asked me to tie her to my fence and then call a number so they could come and take her. (I didn't help, but they came back to follow up)
Another instance my husband and one of my dogs got attacked in the street by another dog who lives at the top of the street and is always left out to roam by its owners. My husband went to the Beleydire and complained and they said that they would have a word with the owner as this is one of numerous complaints.
The dog still roams free, so I avoid that end of the street when on my own.
I think that I have heard or read the same as Marions, and that there was some form of new law brought in to fine owners of dogs that roam free.

The Beleydire do not have a dog catching department, that is what I ment.
They were acting on your phone call, but not all the Beledires act the same.
If there were dogs roaming they would not go out and collect them as some of them are the ones who dump the dogs in the first place.
How do you think they know were expats live, we had a box of pups left out side our restaurant in Ozankoy, I just left them after a day the were collected and most likely dumped on another expat.

Marions. In Cyprus today, 'the Law states that no dog is allowed to roam free in Public.' so I think you and Lor have heard of the same law. But as Karmels said, who will enforce it. I would think though that if it is a law, the police should be the ones that are contacted as first point of call, especially when dangerous dogs are involved. Perhaps if they get inundated with calls they may set up a special dept to deal with it.

i can't see the police enforcing it for one minute-they are far too busy with other matters, such as ensuring motorcyclists wear helmets, drivers use seatbelts and don't speed, drive dangerously or use their phones!
There is absolutely no point in passing laws that won't or cannot be enforced in my opinion.

Yes but the laws are made by the government, and the police work for the military.

Karmel, would you mind rephrasing your sentence "work" for the military. Have you been in Girne police station recently??

Sorry Owl Lady what I should have said is they are controlled by the military.
That is why they are always on the junctions leading to Lefcosia in the mornings the bosses are moving.
