Advice please
Hi all
I have for the past 2 years been planning my move to the TRNC together with my 13 year old son. His father (my ex) was very happy with this.
Last night, out of the blue, he phoned and said he now has major concerns "because of the islands close proximity to Syria and Israel and also as it's primarily a Muslim country."
I don't have any concerns at all but it has upset my son a little bit.
Can anyone offer me any advice on how to put my sons mind at rest?
Look forward to your responses.

Not wanting to get involved with your personal situation, the first thing you need to check is FINANCE, as I say this I do not know if you own a property in the TRNC or have lived here before.
Check this forum for schooling and other problems about living in the North. All you have to do is search this problem on this web site.

Hi Karmels
thank you for your response.
I have been over quite a few times, the last time being may this year. During that visit I went to the English school of kyrenia and all is arranged for my son.
I don't think that finance will be a problem.
Thanks again for your input.

Re: Advice please
I assume UK is getting more affected by the situation in Syria and Israel than we do here in Cyprus.
As for being predominantly muslim, yes, it is correct that most people would answer 'of course' if the question is raised. However, for the majority, it wouldnt change the way they are living their lives if they were to worship a potato instead. I would say your chances of bumping into a religious muslim is higher in the UK than it is here in Cyprus. Also, there is a very high level of religious tolerance.
As karmels have pointed, there are some important considerations you need to look into before moving here. Fortunately, the situation with Syria/Israel and religious intolerance in N.Cyprus is not one of them.

Re: Advice please
Hi loopylou 1 I have live here over 9 years and Karmels over 20.I can honestly say I do not know one local person who is religious, non go to the Mosque(except for funerals),most drink and some even eat pork!!I am sure you will not find any trouble living here. As Kbasat said you have more Muslim related problems, in the UK. Bet they don't wish you a Merry Christmas there, they do here! Don't let your son worry, just come and enjoy!!Weather is going to be 36 today!!!!!

Re: Advice please
Hello Loopylou1 ! I agree with kbasat that there are far more dangerous situations in the UK (terrorism crime rate etc) ! However, in my limited experience, schooling here in TRNC what I do see, through my teaching guitar etc, is that a lot of non TC youngsters return to the UK for onward education ! College/Universty etc which may be a big issue with your decision in a couple of years ! Just a thought, but apart from that I hope you both will be very happy if you do move here ! regards Barry

Re: Advice please
That made me laugh Kemal, and yes I agree, in the U.K. there is more likely to be Muslin related problems than here. The only time I ever notice anything religious is on Bayrams when people often visit dead relatives in the cemetery. One of the biggest reasons for people to live here is the safety and the kindness and hospitality of the Turkish Cypriots.

Re: Advice please
Dear all
Thank you so much for your very kind responses.
I would stress again that I have no concerns whatsoever. The first time I arrived in TRNC I fell in love with the place and the people.
As I said, I have been planning this move for the last 2 years and have investigated and re investigated everything.
Owl Lady thanks for the 36, we have torrential rain here today lol !!!
Barry, my son and I have discussed the possibility of college/uni and have made plans should he decide to move back to the UK (although he's not very academic so I think it's unlikely - bless him!).
Once again, thank you and if anyone else would like to contribute I'd really appreciate it as I'd like to get back to my ex with as much reassurance as possible!
Very kind regards
