Road to KAR/Besparmak Restaurant Closed - roadworks
The road to KAR from Esentepe turning appears to be closed due to roadworks. Does anyone know what's going on and how long it will be closed for? Hopefully, just today as I'm taking my son to airport next week and don't want to have to go a longer way around.

Ercan airport and starting from Esentepe - I know we can go via Gecitkale but would rather know in advance if we have to do a detour - over the mountain via Alevkayasi is also an option but a slow one.

We live between Bahceli - Kucuk Erenkoy and always use the Gecitkale to Ercan route (40+ mins) as opposed to the route via Acapulco turning (55+ mins).

It was open at 6.30pm last night, no workman flagging or coned off.

9:40am Sat 13th......As its only 5 mins from our place and we travel home tonight, took a quick drive out to see what was happening. Man with red flag stood at Esentepe junction and directing traffic to Girne as opposed to going over the mountain. Can only therefore presume that road is closed somewhere along the route.
Hope this of help. We will take the longer route via Girne later today.

Re: Road to KAR/Besparmak Restaurant Closed - roadworks
We went passed on way to Catalkoy this morning around 8am and there were no workmen but when we came back about half an hour ago it was closed off again. Can only assume they are doing roadworks during the day and reopening it at night. We have to get my son to the airport for 6am latest, think we will go Gecitkale way rather than risk a longer detour via Girne unless anyone can confirm what's going on. May ask them on Monday if they are still there.

Esentepe to Ercan via Gekitale is, at most, a 55 mins journey - depending where you live in the village. Going via the Acapulco turning road, invariably, involves several HGVs on that road and extra traveling time/risk of incident. I do not understand why you favour that route, but - hey ho, that's your choice.

I live quite near to Acapulco turning its a lot further for me to go to Esentepe then the airport so I normally go over the top as it were at night it takes me 35 mins tops.

Offshoredi,
Did you pass the roadworks or are they beyond Arapkoy? Just trying to figure out whether the road is passable all the way to the Lefkosa-Famagusta road.

Just for confirmation: Are we all talking about the stretch of mountain road that runs from the Acapulco turn off on up the mountain to the Buffavento turn off on the right at the top, opposite the Buffavento Resturant?
If so, are the works re-surfacing that stretch of road again - going up and are there any signs that they will be doing the same thing - going down towards the Army Camp and eventually "Tiger" trading by the roundabout?

No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Now I am confused.....easily done some might say! Can you, or can you not, go straight the way over past the 5 finger mountain in order to get to the airport......does anyone know? Have to go tonight from Ozankoy but am thinking to be on the safe side sounds like the main Lefkosa road.

You can when the road's not closed... which it has been during the day for a few days recently... however I think they open it up again overnight when no one is working on the road....mrsgee wrote:Now I am confused.....easily done some might say! Re: Road to KAR/Besparmak Restaurant Closed - roadworks
When we came back from Famagusta on Saturday late afternoon they were just closing the road at the bottom near the Acapulco junction. It looked like they were leaving the other side (coming from Ercan) open. They were working on a stretch just past the Buffavento (Nicosia side) and they were digging deeply into the side of the road. Maybe a water gulley?

We are in Arapkoy and we tell the red flag man and he lets us through. We were up at the Besparmak restaurant and the road works were beyond there on the way down. However cars in both directions were coming through (not many but a few each way ) if you really must go that route is passable but I think you'll have to tell red flag man a little porkie about where your going.

Is this the start of the laying of new waterpipes alongside main roads?
There are massive piles of large pipes around, one pile near the Alagadi power station.
If this is it,... we could look forward to months of delays/diversions.;-(
The price of progress.

Went to pick up friends from Ercan last night. Took the main road to Lefkosa to be on the safe side, but found on the way back the road was open over the mountain, could see where digging along the side of the road has been going on....and an abandoned digger (just overnight I assume), so it seems it is open at night.
