Another wonderful performance by the Turksoy opera singers. Amazing atmosphere in the Abbey Refectory and fabulous to see the building completely full.
The four tenors were just brilliant! (well two tenors and two baritones)
A thoroughly memorable evening thank you to the organisers.

The biggest shame is that here in the TRNC we di dnot have an accompanying orchestra. Makes a hug,e huge difference to opera and a balance to the singer.s Does anyone know why no orchestra? Not enough funds/ We have had orchestras in the past - this is the first year we hav enot. Very definitely our loss.

Oh and sorry have to disagree about the tenors. Great imitation, plus one of the famous 'I tre tenori' but for me, the very bestest was the rendering of 'Figaro' A very difficult aria to sing, but he got it right, vocally , gestures, the lot. Brilliant. But then he was double the age (and experience) plus, of most of the singers.

I am told that Monday will be a different programme, but again 'Wot -no orchestra?>'

We loved Figaro too and the two more experienced performers were obviously that, more experienced, but we still thought the whole evening was a great balance of youth, enthusiasm and experience. They didn't dumb opera down but they were reaching out to the masses, I think, with their repertoire.
As to the orchestra I think space would have been an issue in the refectory the place was jam packed. I do remember when Turksoy performed at Girne Castle the orchestra was in attendance and the whole evening was wonderful but very poorly attended which was such a shame.
Possibly in the fairly small confines of the refectory the orchestra plus the performers voices would have been rather too loud given the acoustics of the building and the antiquities department have been concerned about the effects of loud concerts on the fabric of the Abbey.
I think it was wonderful that a performance like this was provided for free, where else could you enjoy an evening like that gratis?

Large posters advertising the event were up in Bellapais, at the by pass roundabout on Girne Lefkosa road and also in Lefkosa. Plus the Turksoy programme booklet has been in all of the tourist information offices so advertising was in place and as the refectory was full obviously the advertising worked.

If memory serves, the Kyrenia Chamber Choir had quite a large orchestra for The Armed Man. A combination of members of the Lefkosa Symphony Orchestra and some from Turkey. The place was absolutely packed but there was sufficient room in front of the stage. So maybe it is down to cost?
