Great big buzzzzzy things head butting the ground?

In Nosheen tonight as you do. A quick curry on the way home there wher these big bugs. They kept head butting the ground. And other peoples tables,not mine thankfully. A right good size. And making a good sound like a squeeling cat. They were going mental. Does any 1 no what thayer r. They didn't stay still long enough to c them.

They're probably cicadas,-known here as ger-gers, or jer-jers. They seem to have no navigation skills and frequently crash into people. They also eject a fluid as they hurtle from place to place, and, as you said, they are extremely noisy.

They seem to form swarms at dusk preparatory to resting in trees for the night. It can be very dangerous to drive with car windows open at this time of the evening. I was struck in the side of the head by one when they entered my car as I was negotiating a ravine side track. The impact was like being hit with a rubber bullet leaving me dazed and for several moments I had to wrestle with the steering wheel to regain control of the car. To this day I feel extremely lucky that I did not have a plunge into a ravine, with the Wildebeest (bless her) !

Agree about the car windows, they are so big that when the hit you inside the car it is dangerous.

Couple of nights ago cat brought one into the house to play with, the noise was horrendous.

One thing for certain Cicadas were at the back of the queue when beautiful critter criteria was being handed out!!

Cyprus in summer = cicadas (gicadas?) that's the way it is...I think 2009 was a bad year wasn't it?
