Hernia Operation recommendations

I have just been diagnosed with a small tear(hernia) I have had an ultrasound and am waiting to see a surgeon at the Kolan hospital in Lefkosa and have been told by the doctor the approx cost is 6000/7000TL which will be confirmed by the surgeon. I know family that have used the private hospital just past the Pia Bella, first left and first right and am thinking of getting another quote from them.
Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.

I have used this hospital in GIrne near Pia Bella and can highly recommend them.
I would tell them you have already had a quote to have the repair and see what they come up with after all its a buyers market so to speak.

It's all a case of speak as you find. I had a hernia and went to the Girne Hospital (the public one) and was seen by a lovely surgeon who spoke perfect English. Operation organised and done at a cost of 840tl. This was a couple of years ago and no doubt it will have gone up a little but is a huge saving on private costs. Granted people are wary of public hospitals and although the medical care was excellent, the meals weren't to expat tastes and other aftercare was left to families who visited, but hey, I was only in two nights (I arrived at 8pm the first evening, operation the following morning, rest of the day and evening for observation and released the following morning), so I didn't feel like eating and I was out before you know it. Never had a problem with the hernia or scar since (unlike a similar operation in England that still causes minor problems).
So if you feel you may be uncomfortable being the only Brit in the ward or you are worried about the menu or whether a nurse tucks you in at night then go private, otherwise the public hospital is a good option.
Obviously this is a personal opinion only.

Thanks for the advice Jimmy, I think I might give it a try but how do you arrange to see the surgeon in the first place and do you recall his name

You can either call in person, rear of the hospital, upstairs to the left there is a reception where you can register and they will give you a number and tell you which room the doctor is in. Alternatively you can ring hospital appointments on 0392 8155097 and say you want an appointment with a surgeon about a hernia and they will give you a time and day. Then half an hour before the appointment turn up at reception (as above) and they will check you in and give you your appointment form. I think the first time you may need your passport. This will cost 10tl. I recently used this system for a small problem my son was having and the appointment times were kept to the minute! Good luck and don't be daunted, it's quite easy.
