If it's that old I don't think anyone else can import it. He would need to import pay the taxes and change the plates and then sell on I think. Otherwise it must be under three or owned by the importer for at least five years.... This is my understanding of the regs for car imports

Hi Groucho,

Thank you for your reply, he is working a bit in the dark as to what is best to do with the van. He would like to sell it on or exchange it for a small 4x4. Would you happen to know how much the import duty would be on a van as I have heard it is less on what is classed as a commercial vehicle?

I may be wrong but I do not think non Cypriots can import commercial vehicles.

The van is already here, as it has been driven from the UK by my son with all his belongings in it. He has been told
to go to Lefkosa to extend the months stay he was allowed when he arrived at the ferry port. The van is not being used for commercial purposes here and all sign writing has been removed from it. My son has had the van since new.

I was wondering if anybody was returning to the UK and wanted to drive back with their belongings might like to buy it.

OK the van is here and has the status of an 'expat' i.e. it's a visitor with a 'temp visa' so it can't stay beyond the period the folk in Lefkosa determine and don't ask me how or what they will deem a suitable period because that's a dark art all its own.

It not being used commercially and having the trade info removed would not change its definition as a commercial vehicle I fear.

A Cypriot could buy it and pay the import tax on it but a Cypriot would probably want it for next to nothing knowing that your son is not in a good position.

Selling to someone wanting to use for shipping chattels back to the UK sounds like a good solution....
