having yet another problem with a PC, help needed

First it was biometric finger print recognition on laptop - problem solved. Now it's the PC. I know that Multimax had problems (now solved or I wouldn't be typing this on the laptop) but have found when I went back on to PC I have lost everything on the desktop, have been left with a black screen only. Do you think it's a coincidence or do I need to take it to my computer man?

Hi,
probably a coincidence, but what you could try before taking it to your "computer man" is doing a restore again - if you look here, this is the post that we did a couple of weeks ago - hopefully this should bring back all your desktop items etc as they were.
Good luck!

Ooops I'd forgotten about that. The start icon is one of the very few things on the screen. Not my week computer wise!!

Would it not be great if all posts like Sophies and others who have problems with their computers if they could all be kept under a new category so as people like me and her who are not computer aware could refer to when we have small problems like this. Last month I had problems with adverts popping up all over no matter what I was watching. I tried so many times to get in touch with Chris the computer man but he was out of the country. I found someone else to see to it , he put a new anti virus program on but still it kept on happening. We later found out it was to do with popups ( a thing I do not understand ). I have seen many posts re computer problems and suggestions from other posters but have to go back months of posts to find them. It would be a god send.

The best way to research most things these days is good old Google.
Just type in your question and be amazed how many other people have asked the exact same question and found the answer.

To get rid of pop-ups install a pop-up blocker device which works really well and solves the problem

Foodie, I think that's a great suggestion, apart from not having to pay someone, it will allow the smarty pants who know all there is to know about PC's and laptops, show off their knowledge and we numbskulls might learn a trick or two. Perhaps the Mods could give it some thought? Jofra, your suggestion worked and hopefully it will stay "repaired" but I had to go back over a month before it worked. The only thing I'm left with now is all the icons which were on the bottom of the screen are up the LHS of the screen, but I can live with that!!

Sophie
Try clicking and holding on the icon bar, drag to bottom and release, should work!

For info, as Owl says, the 'icon' bar (or Task bar) can be dragged this way to top, bottom or either side of the screen as you choose; to re-arrange the icons on the screen, right-click on an empty part of the screen and a small menu comes up - select Sort, another menu - then choose which you want!
