Laptop Problem

Recently my laptop is not being connected to the internet with the Ethernet cable plugged into the router.With the cable plugged into the laptop I get connected.I have a Samsung tablet and with the cable plugged into the router the tablet gets connected so it appears nothing is wrong with the router.Can anybody advise me as to why my laptop is not being connected via the router.I'm a simple soul so a simple answer would be appreciated!!!

It is possible that the 'wireless adaptor' in your laptop is turned OFF.

There's usually a means of turning it on / off on the keyboard - either a dedicated button with an icon that looks something like this: ((l)) , only with the vertical line extending further down, or a symbol on one of the standard keys that is accessed by holding down the 'Fn' (Function) key while pressing the key that has the symbol on it - usually in BLUE (The Function 'Fn' key is normally on the bottom row of the keyboard, at the left, probably somewhere near the left-hand 'ctrl' key and is also normally printed in BLUE)

There is often a light to indicate that the wireless function is active.

There are other, more complicated ways, of checking what the computer is connected to, and what method is currently active, but I think that it would be as well to check the above first, before getting in too deep.

Yes another reason why the Mods/Administrators could do us all a favour and start a Section for computer problems and there could be a Q and A to solve issues.

If you want 'laptop' or 'Computer' information organised and collated in one spot, simply use the 'Search' function on the bar above, and then save the resulting page as a 'Bookmark' (press 'ctrl-D' for those who don't know how), such as this page for 'Laptop'. - Hey Presto - you've got your own 'Specialized Section' on the subject of your choice...

You can use the same Search facility to look for more specific computer problems of course - or indeed, for any subject under the sun! - and then create your own 'instant look-up guide' by 'bookmarking' the result.

Go on! - Give it a go!

I did give it a go and it came up "create as a Favourite?", which I suppose is much the same?

Bookmark = Firefox; Create a favourite = Internet Explorer! Same difference...
(Don't ask me about Chrome, tried it once and dumped it VERY quickly, while other browsers - Opera and the like - never tried!)

'ctrl-D' works on Chrome to by the way. I was a Firefox user for many, many years but have now ditched it since it ditched Google as the search engine in the USA - not long before it goes YAHOO all over the world and that's a step in the wrong direction for me.

To answer an earlier question from someone else, (which I'm sure that Waddo knows more about than me!) - ctrl-D should work in all known browsers - and yes, they might call it a Bookmark, or a Favourite, or something else similar - and you usually get the chance to pick where you want to 'park' it!

But can you not instal (and subsequently have the choice of) several different search engines?
I have firefox, and have installed and can choose from Google, Yahoo, Bing, Amazon, Chambers, Duck Duck Go and Wikipedia... I could find and instal many more.
Then again, you could use (as I do on occasion) TOR..... To use an old saying, "It refreshes parts the others cannot reach..."
