Can anyone help please re email about FAX message

I have received two emails telling me I have a FAX message. I dont have FAX! It says to view by using my PDF reader. One of th mesages is from "No Reply @ my Fax.com" and the other is a long name which including "slating/tiling" which makes me suspect advertising.

Can anyone advise if this is a scam , and I dont actually know what a PDF Reader is - is it a genuine resource and if so how do I access it?

Firstly, does sound like a scam or advertising - as suggested, best to ignore/delete them. I would think that anyone genuinely wanting to send a fax (why? Old-fashioned!) would phone or contact you to check whether you could indeed receive a fax.
Secondly, pdf files are documents that can be read on more or less any gadget - PC's, Apple computers, tablets, smart phones and all sorts of gadgets that use Android & etc. instead of windows. A PDF reader is a program that will display these files. As lots of instruction manuals now come on a disk as a pdf file instead of paper, a PDF reader can be useful to have - the original is Adobe Acrobat Reader (and is free), but there are others (somewhat smaller) that do the job. One good example is Foxit Reader, which is also free.

The other day I was reading an article in some web site or another, describing a download you can obtain as to how you could adapt your PC to send Faxes. It explained that there were parts of the world where faxes were in use a lot. If you think about it, if someone has a need to send a copy of their signature, you could scan the form in question, and give your PC/Printer instructions to scan it and send to a fax machine. I'm a bit of a numbscull as jofra can attest, but it doesn't seem so far fetched to me if you had the right software. I'm sure someone will put me right if I'm wrong!!

http://www.myfax.com is a legitimate setup - which provides a function akin to that mentioned by Sophie - albeit in a slightly different manner.

Provided that you have adequate up-to-date anti-malware software installed on your computer, then I would personally be tempted to follow the link.

However, it may just turn out to be someone trying to sell you something! - possibly the services of 'myfax.com'

- And you do so at your own Risk !

For Sophie, re Fax on a PC.
Just for info one good fax program out of many is called PAMFAX, I have used it for many years. The download is free, and then you create a user account unique to you.
You deposit a few pounds with them and then you upload your word doc / ODT message, pictures, spreadsheets, cover note, et al to your Pamfax (Portal) account, dial in the fax number and bingo it is sent as a fax within minutes. Very cheap, a few pence a page and very reliable, they keep a record of all successful / failure sends....never lost one yet....I do all my UK bank comms through this method rather than surface mail.

elkiton,

I've just had a look at the PAMFAX website - it looks excellent, I might dump the Fax machine and go with them! - Then I'll be able to reclaim some space on the drinks trolley for a much better purpose

Thank you

The clue here to it being junk is has to be why would anyone send a fax to a person who does not have a fax but does have their email? It is to get the curiosity going to get you to open it, if they had something genuine to send they would have scanned and put it in an email. Do not open, it could be a virus. It is easy to send emails which appear to be from a reliable source, junk mail is being sent from what appears to be facebook.
