There is an optician at Kolan, Girne every morning, and another on a Friday afternoon. They both speak English. You can book by phoning the clinic on 0392 815 5900 / 55

The lady optician in the General hospital in Girne is very good and speaks English - Dr Sevim. You take your passport to the registration dept and pay one off fee ( 15tl? I think) Then you go to her administrator and make appointment usually 2/3 days later. Dr Sevim will do tests and issue a eye prescription. You then take this to one of the opticians to have your glasses made up. Akay on the main street have a good selection of frames or will fit lenses to your existing frames.

Waddo,

Dr Savas is at the Girne clinic on a Friday afternoon. If you need an appointment make it early in the week as he is always busy.

Thanks Chris, I will catch him up in Lefcosia, busy there too but easier to get an appointment.

Sad to say, even the people testing eyes (if they are really honest with you) have to admit that there is no-one in the TRNC capable to grinding lenses if you have a complicated prescription. Bi-focal then you have no problem, but a prescription "that is complicated and varifocal they don't have the competency to do it". These are the words of the professor in Lefkosa and advised me to go down south to have his prescription made up. Bog standard prescription then you will have no problems.

Dr. Hatice at Cyprus Eye Clinic did an eye operation for me, good English and very kind and thoughtful and no waiting about.

I use Canada Optics to make up prescription - opposite Karakum Lemar so easy parking, and will also put new prescription in old frames

Deniz1, I am not doubting that fact that Akay ground your varifocal glasses for you, but having had variofocals ground by them twice and once by Canada Optics over a period of 6 years, I have to agree with the Consultant in Lefkosa, they do not appear to have the expertise to grind complicated prescriptions. I also find it amazing that they all think they can make a mark on your lens when I stand over 5ft7 in heels and in most cases the assistants have been far shorter than me. When I've asked to sit down so we can sit face to face and they can do it properly, they aren't interested.

8 years ago Dr. Hatice said that I would need two cataract operations within six months, here we are in 2014 and it's still not necessary.

The man always sits down to mark my glasses for verifocals at Akay. Dr. Hatice told me over a year ago I had a detached retina in my eye and would need an operation, but when I went to the optician in Lefkosia he said it was fine.

I had glasses made by Akay optic, they were unable to grind the lense and had to send them to Istanbul, these were normal bifocals.

It's actually called Ziya Rızkı Caddesi, which is in the centre of Girne, and runs from the Belediye offices up past the HSBC and then joins the main road.

AKAY are at the end nearer the Belediye.

Somewhere around here

"It's actually called Ziya Rızkı Caddesi". So it is Keith, but you will be lucky to find a TC or taxi driver who knows that.

When I was first there I used to give taxi drivers the name of a street and they hadnt the faintest idea of what I meant.

karmels, that doesn't bode well does it, if they couldn't even grind basic bifocals. At least they had some sort of excuse with my prescription (but not a lot)

kaiserphil,

Yes, I know what you mean!

I do find it helpful though, to know the actual address that I'm trying to find, because there are street name signs up on all the streets, (and numbers on most houses) so at least you do know when you have actually managed to find it

Plus, of course, there are (some) street names on Google Maps and Open Street Map - which, presumably, Taxi drivers have never heard of !

Eyes checked at Near East Hospital - 84TL (with 20% BRS discount). Excellent service.

Took the prescription to EyeMotion Opticians to have the prescription made up, as his prices and service are good. The optician here appears to be very knowledgeable and was very helpful. He will conduct an eye test at no cost and no commitment to buy from him.

Eyemotion is on 'the other side'. Go across the Lockmache (?) Pedestrian crossing and walk down the 'shopping street'; the shop is on the right before you get to McDonalds and Starbucks.

I'm getting a lot of very good feedback about this guy down South and will probably give him a try, particularly as neither Canada Optic nor Akay Optics have been successful in grinding my prescription properly.
