Importing a car , Rough Idea of duties etc ??

Friend is considering bringing over his 2003 BMW X3 that he's owned since new , I'm guessing that the fees will be extortionate , any rough Ideas ??

tell him dont waste his time you can go to the customs at Nicasia and ask happy harry there he will take the price from his clasers guide and double it nobody can tell you bar him

Rather negates my post asking if anyone had a rough idea of the costs , I think you mean the glasses guide.

Unfortunately there seem to be no rules, we were told before we bought down our 2004 kia Sedona 60% of valuation as it was a foreign japan import. As gates says they use the Glasses Guide what year is totally up to them. in 2006 in the uk our kia Sedona was valued at 6k and the man kindly used the most up to date book which we gave him and even with the actual import tax at £3600 we still ended up paying a total import of £8,020 with all the extras.
Everyone's case is different so I would say get your friend to inquire at the office writing down and confirming all what he is told he may stand a better chance of it happening

Must agree with Gates, don't waste time effort and money. I am a recent victim . I suppose really that I should have realised, because the whole journey through Europe was clockwork, but once we tried to enter Turkey then the fun and games started, the drive through Turkey was incredible. But every other part after that was about 15 out of 10 on the stress meter.

Not being negative but everything since as been expensive aggro, and I am the proud owner of a beautiful Classic Merc low mileage Ornament. That from the look of things my only way out may be to sell it for breaking, and I don't even know yet if I can do that.

As far as I am aware. whatever the new price of the B.M was then he will pay a minimum of 60% for starters.

The last I heard, because it is a car of European manufacture, it will be 40% - Japanese manufacturer would cost you 60% - of the purchase price - or 40% of a figure that is displayed as the price (according to condition judged at the time) in the version of the (glasses) guide in use here on that day! To give you an idea - a vehicle purchased in UK today with a glasses guide price in showroom condition - is let's say £10000. Import tax on that vehicle here would be a minimum of £4000. To that figure you used to have to as 3500 US Dollars as a one off fee for importation. In addition there was also "stoppage" tax, which seems to still apply to everything anyway, that was at 7% of the overall cost of importation. The best thing your friend can do is bring all his paperwork, including his original bill of sale, along with photos of the vehicle concerned with him and go see the man in Lefcosia as well as asking about it in the customs office in the New Harbour! The cost of importation will be as long as a piece of string on the day he gets here and will grow daily! Unless he is in love with the vehicle and can not live without it then bringing an 11 year old vehicle to these roads is not worth the effort and heartache he will go through.

I thought I'd done my homework when we bought our car over seven years ago.
Not only do you pay import duty, but also a surcharge, which is in dollars. All in all, it cost us around £10.000 for the new log book, tax, the duty and the surcharge. I had expected to pay around 5k.
The car, which is a 3ltr, had very low mileage, and was only worth about 5k in UK, like you, we really wanted to keep it and enjoy driving it. I had two choices, pay up, or ship it back.
Like the above posts, I would advise you against it.

I've imported 3 Morris Minors and was charged between £1100 and £1500 import tax on cars with declared values, when new, of £550 - Glass doesn't go that far back. I did have supporting letters from the Morris Minor Club.
I have no idea how these tax figures were derived. I never saw any supporting paperwork - for one reason you have to use an agent who does all the legwork. In retrospect, they were consistent. I was just glad to escape from the building relatively unscathed.
The usual Expat moan of "they charge what they like!!? is at least partially true because:
a. we don't know/understand the rules
b. quotes obtained are unreliable and can go up once in country
c. a significant amount of money is involved
Although no doubt out of date, I did find the following methodology on CYPRUS44:

Glass's Guide Trade value, irrespective of mileage
Add £1300 for transportation
Then depreciate by 20%

Apply Customs 10%
Dock Fee 4.4%
Military Contribution 2.5%
Stoppage 4%

Add, depending on engine size:
Up to 1600cc 2.03Tl per cc
1601 to 2250 4.03
2250 to 2999 7.3
3000 and above 10.53

ADD ALL THIS and deduct 20% VAT but do bear in mind "they charge what they like!!!!!!!!!!"

genghis, Do we take it that all the above is in reference to a "Classic Car", i.e. one that is 25 years old? But not in reference to a vehicle that is not classed as "Classic" - there is a world of difference between the import of the two types!

Simple rules for importing a car to the TRNC
Low cc
Low weight
Petrol
Low value
older car that you have had from new
So 4 by 4's diesel are expensive S/H heavy with high cc over 2000 costa packet an obvious NO
I imported 6 year old 1250cc petrol Fiesta UK value at the time £2300 import cost £1500/1600 shipping with Euromed £650

The methodology I found on CYPRUS44 is not for Classic cars as far as I am aware - I've only just found it.
However, using my original purchase price of £550 and 2.8 Tl to the £ - which it was!!!, the formula produces a tax of £2063 which is not so far off what I paid - in fact I'm in profit!!!!

I suppose do your calculations and compare that to buying an equivalent car in the TRNC.
Take into account stress and time.
