Re: Pyla Crossing
Previously it has been confirmed that they do.
Also, it was said that if the Insurance person isn't on duty, they'll give him or her a 'shout' - I'm told that they live adjacent to the check point.
Someone else may confirm.
Be aware that there isn't a GC controlled checkpoint at this crossing, but there is a Customs checkpoint manned by (as far as I could see) British Forces personnel.

No xing at Pyla (Pila). There is one at Beyarmudu (Pergamos). Crossing north-south, the insurance dealer lives in the house on the left after passing through the TRNC Immigration check and before entering the Sovereign Base Area (SBA) Customs (not British Forces) check zone.

Re: Pyla Crossing
You are not helping by refusing to acknowledge that although we all know it's actually on the edge of Beyarmudu, it's known to all and sundry as the Pyla crossing point... others visiting this site will only get confused if you keep on correcting this point because they will not understand that you are just being pedantic....tomsteel wrote:No xing at Pyla (Pila). I am helping because 1st time visitors to Cyprus (using this crossing from south-north) need accurate information and not that provided by 'we must be right because we're British' opinionated expats who think because they offer inaccurate information (known to all and sundry) (sic), they must be correct. Being pedantic, but correct, is in my opinion, helpful! You are entitled to a different opinion - so be it!

Re: Pyla Crossing
Very few maps available in the UK have Beyarmudu marked on them and telling them there is no crossing at Pyla is not going to make it clearer - so you really think it's helpful?tomsteel wrote:I am helping because 1st time visitors to Cyprus (using this crossing from south-north) need accurate information and not that provided by 'we must be right because we're British' opinionated expats who think because they offer inaccurate information (known to all and sundry) (sic), they must be correct. Very few maps in UK have Pyla shown either. Visitors using this forum for directions should get 'accurate facts', not ill-informed expat thoughts as to what is right. So yes, I think accurate information for them is helpful. You, obviously, do not so stick with your 'we must be correct' thoughts.

Re: Pyla Crossing
You can buy insurance at that boarder but they wont sell to you unless you have an exemption for the road tax that you can only get at the Metahan crossing with your current license from the UK and all your docs this side up to date
Don't forget that your UK license runs out every 10 years and you will need a current one to get the Greek doc

Re: Pyla Crossing
Agreed gates. The variations of south-north, north-south, hire/personal vehicles, exemptions, 3rd party insurance et al is a complex subject for a visitor, let alone an expat living here. The RoC road tax exemption from Metahan/(Agios Dometios), is required annually for personal TRNC registered vehicles and often requires passport to be shown as well, not always though. Few TRNC car hire companies will authorise travel to the RoC and, if agreed, drivers need a certified letter of authority form the company to even enter the RoC.

Re: Pyla Crossing
fatouche - there isn't one. The crossing is at Beyarmudu. Where are you in the TRNC and I will then direct you. Basically, it's near Gazimagusa off the dual carriageway at Dőrtyol, then head south as directed by the road signs.

Is there any reason for such rudeness?
Most people use google maps these days and both are on there.
I'm sure you both know each other and guess there is some history between you but if someone is asking for a bit of help kindly leave your side issues where they belong.

Re: Pyla Crossing
Last post on this subject unless requested otherwise and this is for visitors coming south-north and using hire cars. Few companies will allow you to travel to the TRNC using their vehicles. One that does is Petsas and they operate from both Larnaca and Paphos Airports and are on-line. They will also arrange 3rd party insurance for the TRNC with a €10 surcharge (total €35 for 1 month - minimum period available). First class service too!

Ref msg 15 above. I have no idea who Groucho is, nor am I interested to ascertain who he/she is. Rudeness is an individual and social perception and you obviously think we are being just so, I do not - we are being frank with each other as opposed to 'PC pussy-footing' madness. I was going to recommend Google, but a lot of the more elderly of our generation are more than off put by IT.

Re: Pyla Crossing
Keithcaley, according to the English Oxford Dictionary a border is," a boundary between two countries or other areas" and that certainly describes the situation here between the RoC and TRNC separated by the UN buffer zone, despite the view of the RoC Government/EU et al. Pedantic maybe, factual - certainly.
chinagbil, that is correct. Only available at Metahan/Agios Dometios crossing (border) point.

Re: Pyla Crossing
Used to live on Pergamos Camp on the SBA right next to Beyarmurdu village in the early 90's. Great place, very happy memories. Was great to see turkish and greek cypriots meeting close by and as they were on the SBA doing some dodgy deals exchanging goodies from cars whilst keeping an eye out for SBA police/customs
We loved living right on the border, like a wild west frontier. All local employees on camp were turkish as no greeks would work that far out...plus greek taxi drivers would often refuse to make the trip as well. Used to frequent Ali's bar just outside Beyarmurdu village on the road towards Pyla. Sadly both Pergamos camp demolished but we managed to rescue some old floor tiling on our last trip, for old times sake and Ali's bar closed and a bit of a ruin.
Beyarmurdu is not Pyla.........Beyarmurdu village is a good 1.5 - 2 miles from Pyla. Pyla is a mixed village of greek/turkish cypriots each with their own coffee shop...during our time the UN had a look out post in Pyla village centre.
Sorry dont know about insurance

Well, now that chiangbill's question has been (comprehensively) answered, and we seem to have the attention of some knowledgeable people, could anyone explain to me why the main road (A2) to Larnaca from Lefkosia appears to go through the Green Line? - And the B2, as well, come to that: see here...
And also in the same area, why there seems to be a complete village actually inside the Green Line - here??

Actually, I think that this only relates to 'I.P. cameras' which are permanently connected to the web, and continuously stream their output to anyone who cares to look at it, rather than the ones built into laptops etc...Hedge-fund wrote:...Careful - your webcam is on - On new PCs or laptops it is the tiny round dot in the middle of the top of the frame - everyone should make sure it is turned off...

Of course, if you have deliberately set your laptop camera to act as a webcam, then the warning applies, just make sure that you have understood and applied adequate security measures.

Rabiye hanim is the person living in No-Mans-Land at the Beyarmudu (Pergamos) ((Pyle / Pyla / Pile / Pila / Πύλα )) Cross-point.
I believe she arranges insurance from North to South and South to North.
You can contact her on Turkish: 00 90 542 874 3961 Greek: 00357 99 355438
Her English is not that great, so best to call her then text car details to her: car make, model, age, reg your Full name and driving licence number, date and time of crossing.

If you want help with directions look on the busy bees website. There are directions from Larnaca airport which I found easy to follow, you might be able to use those with the addition of google maps.
