Mulled wine - can I buy it in North Cyprus?

Or should I have a look in the airport duty free shop in the UK? Would rather buy it locally if I can. Ideally wanted it in cartons if possible.

The Food Lodge in Catalkoy were advertising it the other day,(think it is bottles of home made) not sure of the price.

There are 2 stalls selling it at Lambousa. Again it is home made, but I bought 4 bottles from one of them (Penny) last year and thoroughly enjoyed every drop.

The girls at the food lodge have made theirs based on a German recipe.....Sonja is after all German. They have free samples, so well worth a try.

I'm really surprised that you are so anti homemade mulled wine....

Proprietary makes probably use the cheapest of ingredients and I mean really really cheap! However they don't charge like they have used the cheapest

Here the spices are cheap and available, the wine is cheap and available and the fruit is definitely cheap and available...

Best bit - you know exactly what's in it and it tastes great. Plus you have the kudos of knowing you made it for a fraction of the commercial price

I would use an extra lemon to replace the lime
Vanilla essence instead of the pod if you don't have them
and Spanish red wine....

Just don't get hooked on it...

I can't say that I've ever noticed star anise in the shops here, but I did spot some in Alpha-Mega in the South, and I was so excited that I bought some - even though I didn't have a specific use for it (although I do now...)

The last time I bought from a shop it tasted like a combination of strong Ribena, black tea and cloves. It was awful stuff. However, I have also had some diabolical home made as well. Some people just can't leave well alone and think the more spice the better, and totally ruin it.

If folk could keep them peeled we might track star anise down - I'm sure it's here somewhere now but I can't remember where I last saw it - Years ago Tempo in Karaoglanoglu used to sell spices that I couldn't find elsewhere but things have moved on so much in terms of produce availability...

I was thinking of making up some mulled wine muslin pouches with all the dry spices in them for sale at our Saturday Market stall (Lemar Catalkoy)... hmmm maybe I should. Then all you'd need to do is add the wine, vanilla, fruit and sugar.... Trouble is it's making a profit without seeming to be stinging your customers.

Tell you what - I've got some Star Anise and will make a point of taking some to our stall for Saturday.... If you pop along I'll let you have some.

Yesterday I posted a long reply and it disappeared down a black hole. This seems to happen occasionally these days!!! Grrrrrr........
I can't imagine, that a mulled wine from a duty free shop be any better than anything from a shop here????
Also as it is so easy and quick to make, why buy it from a shop.
My mother made lovely 'Glühwein'(you couldn't buy it ready made anyway) and we did not have 'star anise' in East Germany. It is very potent and I find it takes over all the other flavours. I don't think it will be a failure if you haven't got it. The important thing is to make a 'starter' as Jamie Oliver says. You can make that anytime and then finalise the mulled wine when you want it.

I failed for years to get star anise here and eventually got some brought from the UK. However, before it arrived I found that adding a bit of the Italian liqueur Sambuca imparted much the same flavour and gave it a bit of extra kick aswell.

To be honest I think everyone would have their own favourite mix of spices but star anise is not used in many recipes for mulled wine...

A quit successful blend is ginger, cloves, mace (nutmeg outer) cinnamon stick, orange peel and nutmeg... add things like allspice, star anise, a peppercorn or two to provide extra oomph!

Wine sugar and these spices heated makes a very good winter-warmer.

The basic directions would be if you were to drive down Makarious Street to the traffic light junction where you will find a large Debenhams on your left hand side then turn left at these lights and keep following the road.

You will come to a set of lights where you will see (what I have been told is the old fruit and veg market) and old stone building on the left, go through these lights and turn 2nd right.

That looks to be the place that I thought might be it.

The main road that you turn on to at Debenhams is the same road that runs all the way from the 'Olympic Rings' roundabout, past Alpha-Mega, etc, which should make it easy for anyone who doesn't know their way around that well. Obviously, once on that road, they can just carry on past Debenhams without turning, until they have gone through the set of traffic lights further on...

Keith, the supermarket is a little to the left of the marker on your map - the marker is where Sports Direct is located.

I posted this sometime ago and it will get you there avoiding Makarios Avenue which can get quite clogged up.

When you exit Metehan, with the race course in front of you, turn left. Follow the road through a roundabout and several speed bumps to traffic lights, turn left. Pass a petrol station on your LHS and join a two lane one way stretch, at the roundabout take 3rd exit. Keep in left hand lane and continue through several sets of lights following the curve of the city walls anti clockwise - you will pass JVC sign on RHS, EKO garage on LHS and come to a set of lights which has, on RHS, a building with Dunlop sign, turn right here and then left at next set of lights - as soon as you turn get into right hand filter lane and turn right at next set of lights (you will see a building with yellow sign saying "We sell gold"). This is the B16 (John Kennedy Avenue). Slightly up on RHS you will see the Anthienitis supermarket, there are car parks before it on RHS and opposite on LHS. It has 3 floors - cafe on 2nd floor.

If you continue on the B16 and through another set of lights and you will see Lidl on LHS and sports direct on RHS.

The tricky bit is finding your way back but we tend to do a circular route going to Ikea next and coming back the well known way passing Metro & Jumbo. Just in case you don't know how to get to Ikea, etc from Antienitis here is the way we do it - there may be another route but this is quite straightforward.

Go back to the set of lights near Anthienitis( pass Anthienitis on your LHS). Turn left at the lights and go straight for 5 sets of lights until you see a blue sign showing dotted lines for left/right and straight ahead (Debenhams is on RHS). Turn left here (slip road next to petrol station), towards Larnaca/Limissol/B1/A1 . Follow this road (dual carriageway) until you join the A1 and see Ikea on LHS (junction 2?).
