Heating in an apartment
What's the best solution for heating an apartment? Gas central heating? Electric panel heaters powered by solar? Interested to hear from apartment owners who are currently warm

Re: Heating in an apartment
second the thread of offshoredi - if there's any way you can install a log burner (which i appreciate might be difficult in an apartment) its the most fantastic option of any heating appliance - good luck!

Re: Heating in an apartment
Most economical we were advised is hot air con recomended by heating engineers.
We use a combination of oil radiators and hot air conditioners generally and have a calor gas heater in case of power cuts.
We have low ceilings in our villa so opted out for the need for a log burner

we're having trouble with all of our air con units. For some reason they've stopped pushing out heat, Typical, when you need them, the setting is adjusted to ''flame'' so I'm sure we have it set right
Anyone got any ideas please?

Flower fairy,
It seems to me that you are not on the right setting. Mine is set on the sun setting and works fine.
It would be very strange if all your air con units stopped working altogether. Try different setting
and set the temp that you want to achieve say 20 deg. If your problem persists then I suggest that
you contact Vaughan Williams on tel no : 05338458494.

Re: Heating in an apartment
Thank you both for your replies. Steve, ours are very old, Yoko make, no sun setting, think we may need to upgrade.
We had them re- gased last year. Oh well, looks like I'll have to go shopping for air con units.

Re: Heating in an apartment
Having read all the reports of illegal chopping down of trees in the TRNC, this year in particular, I am totally against log fires. I can imagine in a couple of years time, all the log burning people on this and other Forums are going to be asking "where have all the trees gone" the answer will be "you've burned them" Just stick some extra clothing on and lump it, you'll be moaning about how hot it is in a few months time.

Re: Heating in an apartment
Sophie, you are being a bit harsh there. It's not the people who have log burners but the illegal chopping down of trees that cause the problem. As usual in Cyprus, sustainability is not a word that is addressed. Cyprus Today, Sat 10th Jan, have an article about illegal chopping down of trees,

If you are thinking of getting new air cons the inverter ones work out a lot cheaper to run for heating.

Re: Heating in an apartment
The "flame setting" I think you will find is the dehumidifier setting, in most cases there are 4 settings:-flowerfairy wrote:we're having trouble with all of our air con units. Snowflake = Cooling
Sun type symbol = Heating
Water droplet "flame" = Dehumidifier
Triangle = Automatic mode
Normally in that order on the remote control.
Trust this helps.

I've been told about paraffin heaters that heat rooms well. I have gas heaters at the moment and the fumes are horrible
Has anyone else tried paraffin heaters? Japanese made ones are better than Chinese ones apparently.

I think you will get a lot more condensation with Paraffin heaters. With your gas heater you should always have a door or window slightly open to allow fumes to escape, and have a C02 detector alarm.

Re: Heating in an apartment
When we purchased our place 7 years ago the builder of course fitted "free" aircons all round Beko 12K btu (not inverter) in every room including the very large open plan living room, kitchen and dining area these were ok for the bedrooms but not elsewhere.
We have tried Parafin heaters (no good for us) we tried electric radiators (expensive to run for little heat) Oil Filled radiators (expensive to run for little heat) Electric heaters (not economical) so in the end we changed the Air con units which was the best thing we could have done we changed the bedroom aircons and installed Bosch 12K btu comfort inverter units they cost about the same as a lap top to run as they operate on only 12 volts and really whack the heat out quickly and are very economical, for the large living area we installed an Island DC Inverter 28K btu we are walking around the house in shorts and barefoot it is so warm and the electricity usage is down win win for us.
Thanks to "Dogu Centre" in Alsancak for excellent service, they advised, supplied and installed our new units and did a great job.

Probably the one situated at 262 - 270 High Street, Sutton which is around 14.5 miles from Gatwick. You would also have to take in to consideration the 1997.08 miles from Ercan to Gatwick (as the crow flies). Hope this helps.
