Crossing the border with out of date residency stamp or not!

My visitors visa expired on 31 March and I completed all the processes to renew it on 29 March and will be ready on 13 April at Immigration for new stamp etc. I tried to cross the border today and was advised not to. If I did I would be charged 40 tl per day for every day after the expiry date. Last year I completed my application at a similar time, just prior to returning to the UK for Easter and I wasn't fined when I returned on around 15 April thank goodness. Needless to say I decided to wait until next week. Is this new?

I was under the impression irrespective of age the immigration officer would issue enough time for you to complete the process for example if your dates ran out while in the UK,

Until recent years you could go out the following day your residency date expired and come back on a visa and be able to leave within the visa period without a fine. Now they seem to insist you go out of the country/cross the green line while the residency / work permit is valid and come back when its not, I gather the law states you have 90 days to renew but during this time if you do not get a valid visa you can not leave the island without paying the fine. With an elderly father I always make sure I have a valid visa while my work permit is being renewed and go out at 23:45 on the expiry date and come back the following morning.
