Blunt nose vipers
In less than one week I have seen four vipers in my garden and just outside our villa. I have two dogs and this is very worrying, especially as my one dog had a close encounter with one in our garden. Does anyone know if there is anything I can use to deter them? Obviously it has to be dog friendly. Any ideas??

You can buy a powder to sprinkle around your perimeter, I think its yellow, someone on here will know , maybe Sulphur ? But the downside is someone once said it also keeps the ones that are there already, in. I do know a local who swears by lots of garlic soaked in water for a week and then poured around your perimeters.

Yes,somebody else mentioned sulphur to me. Not sure where I would buy it though. Yapi market? I'm checking everyday for more snakes. So don't think there anymore in my garden.

Re: Blunt nose vipers
I've copied and pasted this from KAR which could be helpful........
KAR wish to warn ALL pet owners to be very aware of snakes now.
We have had several reports of pets being bitten by snakes over the last few days, in many areas, and there have been sightings up at our Rescue Centre. The most dangerous for your pets (and you) is the Blunt Nose Viper.
IF your pet gets bitten ..please immobilise the pet, to reduce blood flow taking the poison around the body, and get it to a vet as soon as possible for treatment.
Preventative measures may help to deter snakes from your garden -- these include putting water bowls/containers around your perimeter as the snakes often enter properties looking for water (pool owners be extra cautious) - if the water is at the perimeter they may not venture into the garden. Also lime powder can be used as a barrier along perimeters boundaries (however you need to be sure that you have no snakes already in the garden or you will effectively be trapping them in !!). Common places for them to hide include under wood piles, in stone walls with cementing missing, under/in storage areas, under water tanks.
Just please please be careful and try to stop your pets mooching and investigating in places that could hide a snake !!

Re: Blunt nose vipers
As mentioned in the original posting, if there are 4 vipers in your garden and one in the near vicinity, then there is a VERY good chance you have a nest somewhere in your garden. The question of water is valid, snakes, like us all, need water to survive. I know of someone this month who lost two of her dogs in as many weeks. I have very "nosy" dogs and as soon as I seen them paying a lot of attention underneath a bush, I"m out there with a broom handle checking out the area. Lets face, we are building more and more properties on what has in the past been their territory, so its not surprising we are tending to come across more of them.

The yellow stuff is 'Kukurt' its what the grapes vines are treated with. You can buy it buy the kilo from the 'poison' shop , my name for it, near Shboom bar in Alsancak. Very cheap. Our gardener put it all round our perimeters after he had done the vine, when asked why I was told that it keeps the snakes out.

Thank you for all your replys. I've been told I can buy this from the yapi market. Will look today. Another snake was in our garden yesterday. But a big black one. Though been told these are ok, and eat the brown ones. Nit sure if these would bite my dogs though if attacked though.
