We flew from Ercan so can't help on getting there but we stayed in Travellers Cave hotel www. Travellerscave.com. It's in village of Goreme & amongst the caves at top of village. Can't say enough about this hotel, it's on several levels in the rock & staff very friendly.
We did a balloon ride with Butterfly Balloons & it was one of the best experiences of my life. There are many balloon companies but this one does not take off at same place unlike some of the others, it depends on the wind as to where you are taken for lift off. A balloon ride is not cheap but worth every penny for the scenery.
Email me if you want anymore info

I'll be watching the replies with great interest as I'm hoping to go next year for my 50th! As my birthday is in february I'm not so sure about the weather then??? Saying that, I love the snow and wouldn't object too much to being snowed into a nice comfortable cave!!!

Not got an email!
We went for my 50th April 2011. No snow but it was cold, needed a coat on most of time but sun did shine sometimes, although we also had heavy rain.
Goreme is a lovely little town, the open air museum is within walking distance & plenty of choices of eateries.

Spyder if you go there during February take lots of warm clothing it is freezing, but you will love the place, and the underground city is a must see, you will find lots of cave accommodation and at that time of year, you should find it easy to get a b/b for the week, but there are still lots of tourists around from all over the world, we just caught a bus and it took around 10 hours, that was from Kusadasi, but you will find that you can get a bus from any destination to Cappadoccia, the bus's are very comfortable, and if you are going to Cappadoccia you may as well go to ephesus and Pamukkale both wonders of the world, we just loved them.

We had a fantastic time, managed to keep away from the tour guides as well. Unless you are dying to see lots of Cave and rock churches all in one place I would give the open air museum a miss or maybe go at the first or last hour of opening. they are so rude!!!!!!!!!!!!
A group was standing outside a church, hearing all about it - in russian - so we thought we go in before them and the guide would not let us, he just blocked the door way!!!
We saw many other lovely churches that were away from this museum with nobody shouting or pushing us.

The balloon ride was magical. Even though there were many balloons going up. It made the landscape even more bizarre, something out of the Hobbit or similar.

We went last Christmas and woke up to 6'' of snow! It's a beautiful place.Stayed at the Travellers Cave hotel and thoroughly recommend a cave room with open fire and jacuzzi bath,a great way to relax after hard day 'trekking' around the sites.
We thought ZELVE National Park was so much better value than GOREME NP.
Also the Fairy chimmneys at PASABAGI.
Underground Cities as must.Take good strong walking shoes. A torch with extra batteries.Binoculars.
Try the Anatolian cuisine. All restaurants have open fires. You can't purchase alcohol in shops.
Hope this helps an enjoy your trip.

thanks Carol!!

scoobydoo, mid to end of September is perfect, but also spring, but not April, that is their rainy month

Hulyam - you can purchase alcohol in the shops, but it is very expensive, a bottle of Jack Daniels, normal size, 100tl!!

We wanted to go to one of the underground cities, but have to save it for another visit, which we will definitely do. We picked Göreme as it was central and let us visit lots of places without a car. We do not drive, but it's no problem, when we did ask the hotel to get us a taxi, they would not hear of it and took us and collected us.

Eva

So glad you enjoyed your trip. It truly is an amazing place & somewhere I will return to for sure.
Looks like you stayed at Travellers Cave hotel, beautiful hotel & such helpful staff too.
I was in your neck of the woods last week, stayed at Arch Houses again.

It seems very interesting: how does one get there by air?
Thanks

Jim,
I would probably fly into Esenboğa (Ankara) and then take a coach from Ankara's bus station. However, for a little more you could fly into Kayseri, which is closer to Kapadokya ... unfortunately though it wouldn't be direct from Ercan.
Rgds,

We flew Ercan- Sabiha Gokcen & took a taxi to Pendick where we spent several hours having lunch & mooching about the town. later in evening we flew to Kayseri. Transfer time from memory around an hour. The cost of the flights to Kayseri last year were around £48 return.

On our return we had less time to kill between flights, so we went to the big shopping mall near the airport & shopped.

We decided that whilst cheaper, travelling all night on the coach was not for us.

Dawnie, the coach journey from Ankara to Kapadokya only takes 3 1/2 hrs.

Howewer, from Istanbul I agree with you - I too would fly.

Ian we loved Pendik, certainly worth a visit. We had an amazing fish lunch overlooking the water. The market is huge for a walk around too.
