It's been on every bill since my first (February 2016), last item on the right-hand side - and it's been zero every time, not even a kuruş!

Seems like it is there in case an incentive should be deemed necessary.... i.e. it's not active just now.

I wonder if it has anything to do with those people who "produce" their own electricity and sell excess back to Kibtek. I know two people who do that when they are out of the country. Damned expensive gubbins to install I believe. Just a thought.

Yes I would think you are correct Sophie you can either have cash (I would like to see that happening!) or a credit on your bills. My friend looked into it & estimated that the capital cost of the panels would be recovered in 5 years. It would be an excellent way to go to reduce the amount of diesel burnt. You see so many banks of roof panels in UK now so if they are worthwhile there they must be 10 times more effective here!

The other difference - apart from the amount of sunshine! - is that the UK Government 'kick-started' the industry in the UK initially by heavily subsidising installation and 'payback' to make it attractive to consumers.

That doesn't seem likely to happen here...

A solar PV system may can have the mentioned 5 years payback. (if, then for very cheap made china products only, so better spend a bit more..and accept it to be a bit longer..).
PV panel systems produce (not “produce” ) approx 1,6 to 2 times more kWh per year as in the UK. Unfortunately not 10 times.
The “kick start” in the UK made systems quite expensive... even after subsidy the payback was (and is??) 12 years +
(correct me.. iam not 100% sure)

On the other hand.. “how many years payback” should it be? Two years? 1 year?, until people do NOT say “the gubbins are (believed to be) damned expensive”.
In the TRNC, PV solar systems ARE subsidised... since middle of 2014.
1. A reduced VAT to 5%.
2. As you get “net metered”, you do not pay VAT for the kWh used from the grid, eg during night or often also in winter. that accounts for, at the moment, 10% of your bill.
Note: in the UK you do not get net-metered: you still pay for your energy taken from grid and pay VAT for it. For the production from the solar plant you get a seperate meter and seperate account (and then monies transferred to your account) and in some countries you have to pay VAT on that production as well.
“instrument” 1 is an immediate 11% subsidy, instrument 2 is difficult to calculate, but both will amount , during the 20 year “net-metering contract” you have with the government, to approx 25 to 30% of the original investment costs. (price rises for electricity and therefore higher VAT included)
eg, imagine, after a reunification, the kWh price we have in TRNC may nearly double...

Btw.. how and how much the RoC subsidise PV systems?

So, while eating your lunch package , you may think.... and get a (proper) solar system...

(kWh ) credits yes. But no cash. Well, close to.
İf , for any reason, you have “too many credits” in your account, you can sell these credits to KIBTEK.
You do NOT have a chance to say (at application for such a system) “ I do not want credits, but cash”.

The “cash for credits” is subject to an application and the “price for one kWh” you receive most probably will disappoint you.
at best, it just covers costs.
İt is an emergency exit for eg, far too big designed systems or, eg, when the house can not be used as originally planned.

I had solar panels installed in the UK at a cost of £6600 and payback was just over 6 years! It was before they reduced the buy back rate!

so, we do actually have "kick start" conditions in the TRNC.
