Hi can anyone advise current fees to renew please?

Can i ask under what circumstances one would need a TRNC driving licence? I am in UK, but buying a Villa in TRNC, only to holiday in, stay for extended periods / rent out for now, but retire to at some stage. I know my UK DL is valid when on holiday in rental car, but would i need, or benefit from, a TRNC DL once i have address there, or wait until i retire there, which i assume is probably why i'd need one if i no longer have a UK address whenever it happens. Would i need to be permanent resident to apply for one in any case?

You can only legally use your UK license for 90 days at a time. You dont need to be a permanent resident to apply.

You'll be very lucky to secure any form of 'residency' in the TRNC. You will get a 'visitor' status stamp in your passport, which requires a convuleted process for the first time.

Very few expats are 'residents' of any nature. We are classed as "visitors" as written on your passport visa. As stated before, you need a TRNC DL if you drive here over 90 days in a year or you own/drive a TRNC plated/registered vehicle, less hire vehicles. At least that is my understanding of the situation. I am more than happy to be corrected.

It's a very confusing situation and even officials don't seem to know for sure.

My understanding is the same as Tom's: that you may only drive on a non TRNC licence for 90 days in any year. If you are under 60 years of age and stay in TRNC for a period of more than 90 days you are required by law to obtain a visitor's visa, once obtained you can then apply for a driving licence. For over 60s, you can choose to stick to letter of law and obtain a visitor's visa or trust the 'gentlemen's agreement' and not bother, in which case you need a letter from your local Muhtar to apply for a driving licence.
If you own a car, even if you don't stay for more than 90 days, it seems you must obtain a driving licence. How you go about that I'm not sure, hopefully someone will be able to help if that's the case.

The most important thing to be aware of is that if you have an accident and don't have a TRNC licence or indeed a valid visa when one is required, you will not be insured and the accident will be your fault as you will be found to be be driving illegally. This will almost certainly lead to a fine and being charged for all damages plus, in serious cases, possible imprisonment and deportation. I've never understood why anyone would take the risk.

There is no link between a residency stamp in your passport and obtaining a TRNC driving licence. If you don’t have a residency stamp in your passport when applying for a TRNC driving licence you will need a Mukhtar’s letter to confirm your place of residence.

Quite true, as an expat, you are highly unlikely to get a any form of 'residency' status in your passport. We are designated as 'visitors', not 'residents', despite what expat deem themselves to be classified as. A bit like the Pyla/Beyarmuda crossing debate. There is NO crossing at Pyla, despite what expats insist.

Would seem to confirm what I posted, if you are under 60 and here for more than 90 days you need to get visitor's visa before applying for a driving licence. It was certainly the case when I applied for my last 2 licences.

This news item from 2018 (which included this gem) -
"If you own a property here, [or intend to rent for more than 30 days at a time], the Law states that if you intend to drive you must hold a current and valid TRNC driving licence. This also applies if you are renting a car as well."
....but then "citizens of Turkey, EU member states, .... will be exempt from the new practice....."
- was provided in this thread, which clarified the matter completely (I don't think!!). So, I and a neighbour who own and are here somewhat over 90 days (in total) per year got licences; another neighbour (owner) who is here less than 90 days asked and was told not to bother....

Just get a TRNC licence. It's not difficult. Then if the worst happens at least you will have the correct documents.
I could not contemplate being involved in an accident & finding my insurance was invalid because I did not have the correct licence

DL's are invaluable as we have found on many occasions, because your passport number, photo and details are on the rear. Need to prove who you are, "just flash your D.L" be it bank, hospital and sundry Government offices.

So, what do you do - and what is the cost - when your TRNC license has an old passport number on it because you have changed/renewed your passport?

Waddo, I believe your passport number is always the same, even when you renew.

Soner, have recently renewed our passports and the numbers are now totally different. I mentioned this to the police and immigration that passport and driving licence were not the same and the both said it didn't matter until the D.L had run out, then we would need to update it. Even our bank accepted the difference in numbers.

Just renewed mine. (Why this tread started) I had a new passport so new number. Just needed new Muchters letter which ties your passport to your address. Over 60 so no residency needed

I will get back to you honest but been very busy of late - surprise guests are always good, hmmm! My latest passport number is different from the one before that, which was different from the one before that so I think they always change! However, just seen the top of the thread where the prices are and now see that a replacement is 175TL so I guess I will just wait till my DL runs out and then apply with new passport number.

MnM, get a TRNC DL, it won't break the bank, get it for 10 years because it will go up in price again next year. You can't use it to drive in the South, but then once you have your European Citizenship revoked you won't be able to anyway, unless you get a visa and the South still recognises your (illegal after six months of living outside the EU/UK) UK driving license. It is a very handy form of ID Card that is accepted all across the North and it solves lots of car purchase problems and insurance problems that can crop up at any time. Well worth the money!!
