Casting from laptop to tv.

Hi.
I'm trying to cast my laptop screen onto my tv.
I've used the computer casting system which does work but is frequently freezing, which is very annoying .
I am told that you can by a dongle to plug into the tv to make it work successfully.
Does any computer buff on the forum know which one to buy, preferably on Amazon, or locally.

Many thanks.

Thanks tutor.
Had a look at chromecast and it's quite expensive.

I had a similar problem with Samsung tablet casting to a Samsung TV using Smart View. Problem 1 was the TV and tablet were connected to different devices via WiFi, one to the router and one to a range extender - it's best if they are connected to the same device. Problem 2 was my tablet had a VPN running, by accident, once that was disabled no more buffering. We also have a Chromecast on another TV which works very well.

There are generic alternatives to Chromecast e.g. 'Allcast' etc. which are cheaper and do the same job - may be easier/cheaper to obtain here.

I use a 2 meter USB-C to HDMI lead when using my mobile phone to TV. No lag, no buffering, no problems. If your laptop has HDMI output this might be your best and cheapest option.

Many thanks for all the advice.

We have used the HDMI cable solution but it's really not practical with our room setup. We just thought that someone could give advice who had overcome the same problem.
Will make a visit to a computer shop and see if they can suggest a solution.

Can you select watching TV programmes in SD format rather than HD?

If your TV supports it, press

Windows + K and choose your TV.

Hi stereotomy.

That exactly what I do and it works for a while . The tv then freezes and the laptop still plays.
It keeps happening.

HDMI cable is the way to go. Though you do have to turn the laptop away so you don't get distracted seeing the two screens. I have a 35m HDMI lead you'd be welcome to but i won't be able to get it to you any time soon as I'm UK now.

HDMI cable cheapest option. Hide cable behind TV and only plug in when required or also but a cheap laptop and keep in position permanently

I find that using a cheap android box at around £25 or so is the best option - it's cheaper to replace when it needs upgrading, and I can have one in every room in the house where there's a TV....

eBay! - and then get someone to bring 'em out...

Paul Alfred at Satellite Cyprus does hold some in stock, but obviously not at anything like the same price, although his do have all the apps that you need, so still a good deal.

A Google search throws up a number of cheapie Android STBs available from various retailers in Nicosia. I will cross over and have a look.

I did once buy a STB from 'Public' in the Cyprus Mall - the shopping place next to IKEA, - it was supposed to be the Bee's Knees at the time, and it was OK but terrifically expensive!
