Insect Killing Contraptions

Hello All,

Our new summer lounge & kitchen is plagued with all sorts of flying insects. We are trying to keep the glass doors closed, as much as possible, but they are getting in, and driving us all mad.

Can anyone recommend any effective solution? Are there any electronic zappers available locally, that actually work? We really don't want to have sticky fly-paper rolls hanging from the ceiling, but may have to resort to these, if we can find them anywhere.

Any helpful advice would be very gratefully received.

the vast majority of insects that fly in will not harm you,and don't want to be there as much as you don't want them there.

The ones that want to bite you are best dealt with by decent repellent applied to yourselves.

Killing everything is not a good way,and unnecessary in my opinion.

You will kill honey bees which do a lot of good.

Cyprus has a lot of flying insects.

In conclusion, if you don't like insects, maybe it's not the place for you?

Whilst I have lived here the only insects that have bitten me are practically invisible.

It seems now you are a expert on flying things.
It was only last week you had a problem with your clothes and holes.
I think HotHippo is looking for the ultra violet type of machine that zaps the little buggers with electric.

I never said I was an expert on anything?

Although,I didn't know what was eating my clothes,I sought advise on here, and now I smell of naphthalene.

With regards to my last post,I do know enough about insects to know that most are harmless and a lot are useful.
Killing everything that moves is an indiscriminate way of dealing with what you may class as pests.

When the last bee has been zapped, have you thought how the food you eat will be pollinated?

Potentially it could signal the end of the human race.

When that happens you wont need to worry any more about insects in your kitchen.

Sorry if my post offended,I wasn't trying to be a 'smartarse' as you seem to imply.

Maybe I am just a little smarter and more aware than you?

You can buy an electronic type of fly swat ..
I have seen these at Çoban & the DIY shop opposite to Supreme ..
One was battery operated & the other was re-chargeable ..

Hippo was talking about the kitchen and bluebottles etc. settling on food will certainly contaminate it. Some peple are terminally allergic to certain insects.

The locals used to hang plastic bags and bottles of water at windows to reflect an image of giant ogre flies and scare them off. Any shiny object helps - eg. old CDs Prettier are the shiny glass baubles you can buy at the Market and China Bazaar andMr. Pound etc. Get one with a blue eye and you can cope with the evil eye and witches while you are at it.

Or try websearch for herbs you can grow in the window cill which will deter insects.

Flies, not bees, are the problem. We'll only switch the zappers on, when the bees have been ushered to safety.

Fit fly screens...end of problem, best money we've ever spent.

We had the blue lamps. They were OK but they don't attract mozzies.

Neither did our fly screens stop sandflies!

Kp has a point. Screens cant be small enoough mesh to stop the smaller insects that are sometimes the most dangerous. They also restrict the free flow of air in hot weather. I have them at kitchen window only but that is to stop swallows that used to fly in and make a horrible mess.

Agreed, screens can't stop EVERY little insect, but for us the mozzies are the worst and they certainly keep them out. Maybe we are lucky where we are, but have never experienced sandflies in the 7 years we've had our place. Occasionally get little tiny flies come through the kitchen window fly screen but a sticky trap on the outside seems to attract and catch them ok.

Yes fly screens may restrict the airflow through them but without them (especially at night) we'd have to keep the doors and windows shut and that DEFINITELY stops the air flow!!

I'm one of the unfortunates that insects like to bite and often get a bad reaction. I couldn't survive without fly screens.I'd be eaten alive.
It's not just the mossies,it's those tiny things that look like ordinary house flies
I may cover myself in repellant but they always find a spot i've missed.
Yes of course some get past the fly screen barrier and you have to open the fly screens to get in & out The mossies are queueing up outside to get in.
It's red alert in our house when a flying insect makes it through.The hunt is on to get it before it gets me.
We open windows,patio doors and have no problem with airflow.
Be interested to know more about the sticky trap and where to source it

Fly screens are great if you have standard shape square windows. All the windows and doors in our house are arched so a non starter for fly screens. Unless some enterprising company now makes arched fly screens.
