If anyone lives near or passes by Catalkoy to or from Karakum, Girne, you will pass UPPER CRUST cafe. You should definitely stop by and enjoy the fresh made snack/dessert. I've been curious of it for awhile, but never ventured to try it until recently. I got something small and it was dElicious. I took a menu; and from the selection, I think I will go again soon. YUM!

I went a couple of times and I agree about the quality - but the prices!!!!

I now get similar treats at Lambousa market - just as good and a lot cheaper.

Fantastic Quiche wish i could make it as tasty and yummy as that and scotch eggs to die for. They also do trays for airline travel and you can choose what you want. Really recommend anyone to try it.

@ Belle

Hello, just to be clear, I am Gordon Kent, founder, owner and manager of Lambousa Market.

In point of fact most of the stallholders at Lambousa and the other markets held in the TRNC are persons with businesses registered in the TRNC.

Too, the huge majority of the stalls are not jumble, but are bespoke or specialist stalls ranging from professional quality food-stuffs (including three excellent bread-makers now selling authentic Cypriot, German and British breads), new and good-quality second-hand fashions, flowers and plants, antiques and collectables, arts and crafts, charitable works and, yes, some jumble (often of excellent provenance). And this is merely a taste of what's on offer.

None of the stalls are "rubbish". Occasionally someone may visit so as to clear their house of an unsorted and wildly varied array of second-hand goods but all that is is higgeldy-piggeldy. To disparage all with your awful generalization does a massive disservice to the entrepreneurship, huge collective effort and excellent vibe that the TRNC Market-Traders, craftsmen and people who choose occasionally to sell bring to the markets.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion. And I am entitled to mine: that yours is ill-thought and founded in mean-minded misanthropy. I happily assume that the massive support and visitors the markets engender proves my case.

You have obviously never been to Lambousa Market Belle. We go every other week from Tatlisu to Lapta a journey of some 1hr 10 mins. If it was full of rubbish I would not go. I enjoy the variety of the bespoke stalls there. Well said Mr Kent
As I got older I congratulated myself on my tolerance..... Now I realise I just don't give a "ooops"

Not a market person myself, especially in the summer. However, Lambousa is an exception. Belle, your opinion is yours and valid for all that. However, just as bottoms, everybody has one and not all use them wisely.

I go every Saturday so I do know what I am talking about. I was there yesterday and the first thing I noticed was the stall or person selling filthy half used candles, and the clothes I wouldn't have the cheek to give away let alone sell.

Some stalls I will accept are reasonable and the food ones are all good, but it is mostly a big jumble sale, the only true market is Weds in Girne.

@ Belle again:

Your powers of observation are extremely limited if you think Lambousa is "mostly a big jumble sale". At the end of August (traditionally our "quiet" season owing to the heat) our stalls comprised the following general types:

Clothing (mostly new): 18
Food: 14
Arts & Crafts:8
Jewellery: 7
Charity: 6
Jumble: 6
Antiques: 5
Gifts: 5
Pictures: 4
Plants: 3
DVD: 3
Cards: 3
Books: 2
Toys: 2
Bags:2
Insurance: 1
Watches: 1
Cosmetics:1

Given the presence of so many types of stalls - with so much variety on offer within each type - I'd appreciate learning what your definition of a "true" market is. In any event pretty much everyone except you considers the Lambousa Market to be just that.

: I'm just going to say that for some reason I get the same vibe about/from Belle being negative and "ill-thought and founded in mean-minded misanthropy." You are saying that Lambousa market sells jumble rubbish, ok, that is YOUR opinion. No one needs to know or care about negativity. If you think something is wrong or not good, then let a person discover on their own. Assuming you do not like LM, then why the heck do you go every Saturday? You know what is there and obviously do not like it. Stop going! Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you also the one that complained about a fellow kibkomer selling toys and calling it "wretched"? What's it to you? And they were not wretched, they were actually very good toys, and selling for cheap compared to stores. Also, in way better shape than a lot of toys I see at the market(s). " Belle, your opinion is yours and valid for all that. However, just as bottoms, everybody has one and not all use them wisely." ANYWAYS
thanks for bringing back the topic Halffull
JBA- agree, great quality- but the prices! 1 point: I understand you have to charge something for the ingredients, 2 the labor, and 3 profit. I got the minced beef, potato, carrot pie(?) looked more like a stuffed mini bread- 9TL... I had to think quick if I wanted to pay that or not, so I considered ok well it has meat- that is expensive... "Okay I'll have 1."

I've bought stuff from Upper Crust, not often as I do find it expensive, but if I want to spoil me and my other half with a tasty pie or cake then it's good enough for me. Like most people we have to live within a budget so only push the boat out now and then, but for something special Upper Crust is the place to go.

Likewise if we want to buy on a bigger scale, perhaps to stock the freezer, then we go to Lambousa where there is plenty of good food on sale, as for the *jumble*, well I just walk past it, I certainly don't let it spoil my visit to the market.

Can't beat Upper Crust for quality pies and cakes. Premises always super spotless. At the end of the day you get what you pay for and I certainly don't begrudge a single lira for the top quality products sold here
